Hello to the parents and students,
I am a 2008 graduate of San Diego State University holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Sciences, and I am currently a geologist at a private consulting company. I have had a wide scope of scientific training as a result of my academic experience, work related projects, and personal interest since childhood. In regards to a writing background, my skills stem from honors English courses in high school and college, as well as technical writing as a part of working as a geologist.
My task as a tutor is to solve the following problem: Help your student to develop a better understanding of earth sciences, space sciences, or writing, in a way that differs from your student's current learning environment.
Though the solution to that problem will differ slightly from student to student, what I have found is that better understanding generally comes from a few things:
- The student understands that he or she will not be judged for their level of knowledge on the subject, allowing the student to begin to ask questions they would normally be afraid to ask out of fear of judgement. After this is established and questions are asked and answered, confidence in their knowledge builds, and improvement follows.
- Approaching the subject in a way that is different from the way they've most likely been taught. An example is trying to teach students the workings of the lunar cycle from a textbook; it works well for only a few people, but if the cycle is related to their textbook with visual demonstrations using everyday objects or, simply by looking at the sky, that same cycle can be made far easier to understand.
Given my academic and work related experience, and my passion for sharing with people the inner workings of the earth and the Universe, I believe I can have a positive impact on your student's ability to grasp the concepts of the subject he or she needs help with. Most people have an interest in learning about these these subjects, and I can help make them interesting and more easily understood.
