I am an elementary school substitute teacher and an after school tutor. I am an educator with a positive outlook and a clear focus with my sights set on providing the highest quality of instruction for your child.
I am able to interact with a wide variety of people. I have been successful working with at-risk students, students who were clearly heading for retention, students with attention deficit disorder, and students within the autism spectrum.
I have taken graduate courses in elementary education and have attended professional development classes to improve my methods for teaching reading. I have also attended classroom management trainings, seminars, and workshops.
I am resourceful, patient, kind, and supportive. I am able to motivate my students to perform to the best of their ability. As a professional tutor, I have helped my students elevate their reading scores.
I will tailor a learning program specifically designed to focus on your child's individual abilities and needs. I will pinpoint areas of strength and areas that need to be improved.
I have experience teaching phonics and techniques to improve reading comprehension skills. A few of the fundamentals I focus upon include:
Helping struggling students build fluency
Helping students be able to summarize a passage or story
Helping students be able to determine the sequence of events
Helping students link the events of a book or story and relate those to real life
Helping students expand vocabulary and the meaning of words
Helping the student make connections and predictions
Teaching my students note taking skills
Learning these fundamentals and working in an organized manner should help students with math problem solving skills, too. The ability to look for key words helps them determine which mathematical operation to use. I think it's important to convey how important math is and to be able to relate it to how we use it everyday in our own lives.
Most importantly, I will create a respectful and nurturing environment in which your child feels valued and encouraged to achieve academic excellence. I will do all that I can to encourage your child to become a lifelong learner.
