Hello! My name is Courtney and I am a tutor with Wyzant for subjects in math, English, and science. I have taken Honors and Advanced Placement courses in math, science, and English since middle school. I have maintained a non-weighted Grade Point Average of 4.0 since the seventh grade, and graduated third in my class with High Honors from Will C. Wood High School with a GPA of 4.67. My academic record allowed me to be pre-accepted into UC Davis, where I am currently a student of Animal Science. At Davis, I continue to carry an overall GPA of 4.0, and have made the Dean’s List many times.
My proficiency in math prompted my placement into math classes that were a year ahead of the average level for my class standing. I have taken Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Honors Trigonometry (Pre-Calculus), and AP Calculus. I passed all classes with an A, and received a perfect score of 5 on the AP Calculus test. I also completed a class in Short Calculus and one in Statistics at UC Davis, again receiving an A in both classes. I realize that not all students excel in mathematics, and that sometimes teachers can move quickly through difficult material. As a tutor, I will help to simplify tough problems and concepts at a customized pace so that you as a student will better understand the assigned topics.
I have taken many classes in English, Literature, and Composition. In high school, I took English XL, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition. I passed the AP test with a score of 4, and all classes with an A. I have also taken many classes at UC Davis in Literature, Humanities, and Science that require extensive writing and literary skills. I have experience writing expository, persuasive, reflective, descriptive, and creative essays, analytical papers, and detailed research papers and book reports. I can assist students in creating an evocative, convincing argument and thesis statement, as well as proof-read existing work for grammar, logic, and completeness.
Science is my favorite subject and I am very happy to help students excel in their science courses. At the high school level I have taken and aced Environmental Science, Biological Science XL, Honors Chemistry, and AP Physics. As a Science major, I have also taken many science classes at Davis, including 6 courses in Chemistry, 3 courses in Physics, and numerous courses focusing on Animal Science. I can assist students in such often complex areas as electrochemical, stoichiometric, gas law, and thermodynamic chemistry, and conceptual, conservation, and kinematic physics, as well as Biology and other related courses. I can help students struggling in their high school and college science courses so that they may be able to beat and surpass previous scores.
For students who have trouble with test-taking, I can help them to develop specific skills and strategies for problem-solving so that all of their hard work pays off when the big test day rolls around. I received a total score of 2010 on my SAT reasoning test, and can assist students in raising their own results. I can also help improve SAT subject test scores. I scored a 700 in Mathematics and a 710 in Literature for the SAT Subject Tests, and can work with students to study and prepare so that they can achieve the same success.
I sincerely believe all students can achieve their goals with the right help and work ethic. School can be tough, but a more thorough understanding of the assigned subject matter can relieve the stress of tests, quizzes, and grades. If you find yourself or your child struggling in math, science, or English courses, consider asking for the help and guidance of a tutor.
