Hello!

My name is Jonathan, and I am a working musician. My main instrument is the bassoon (for which I hold a performance degree from California Institute of the Arts) although I play and teach all of the other woodwinds (except for flute). I have taught at many colleges and universities, and have been guest performer/lecturer in several venues. I have a specialization in contemporary music orchestration and arrangement.

I feel that music instruction should be accessible to everyone, and I am interested in working as a music tutor in the South Bay area (Palos Verdes-Malibu). My studies have taken me all over the world, and I would love the opportunity to be a source of inspiration to young students.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Jon

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I have been playing clarinet 18 years. While pursuing three degrees in bassoon, I have always taken lessons, taught and performed on all my auxiliary instruments. I am constantly playing in pit orchestras, where the standard of playing is very high.

Composition (Music)

I have taken composition classes throughout my time in graduate school. My focus is on contemporary music and experimental music, but in order to write that there needs to be a good foundation to work from and this is where I teach.

General Music

Having 18 years of musical training, I feel that a general music education can help anyone even if their eventual outcome is not to be a musician. I can generally assist in pretty music any field of music from african drumming to gamelan.

Oboe

I sub in as a principal oboe in a few orchestras, as well as pit orchestras. I have private oboe students, and I teach english horn as well. students should have an interest in learning how to make reeds.

Saxophone

I have been playing saxophone for 18 years, and I play in musical pit orchestras all over Los Angeles. I have played all sizes from soprano to bass. I focus on technique and sound rather than improvisational style.

Sight Singing

Every conservatory I have been to, has had sight singing classes and tests. I have been in school for 13 years. I also get called now and again to do readings of new musicals, which requires that you can sight sing music.

Theatre

I have doing theater since I was a kid. I have participated in numerous shows, mainly musical theater but I do straight plays as well. I think that everyone should have a bit of theater background which helps you open up to the world.
