Hi! I am a UC Berkeley Music graduate offering guitar lessons to beginning and intermediate guitarists. I also offer music theory & sight singing lessons. My primary stylistic focus during my 13 years of playing has been instrumental rock & metal music. Guitarists such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, and Paul Gilbert have had the heaviest influence on my style & technical abilities.

Music theory is an important area of knowledge for any guitar player, which is why I prefer to dedicate a portion of each lesson to sharpening students' understanding of harmony & rhythm. Every student will have areas of theory that need more work than others; I design what I teach to fit the needs of each particular student. My overall teaching goal is to give students the technique and musical knowledge necessary to develop a natural, unconstrained ability of expression on the guitar.

If you are simply wanting to learn music theory/harmony, I am certainly able to tutor in that area alone. Whether you have no knowledge of harmony & rhythm at all, or have a solid foundation of music theory that you wish to expand upon, I can design lessons around your needs and help you achieve your compositional goals. For instance, you may already know how to read/write music and build 3 or 4 voice harmonies, but would like to learn about more advanced chords (such as 7th and 9th chords) and how to properly resolve them. On the other hand, if you are starting completely from scratch, I can efficiently teach you the basics of theory and progress appropriately to more advanced levels of notation & harmony.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will respond ASAP.

Ear Training

My Bachelor's in Music involved 4 progressive years of musicianship study; each level of this class focused heavily on ear training and dictation. The highest level of the course involved transcribing piano progressions with augmented 6th chords, diminished 7th chords, and inverted dominant chords. Having paid close attention to what methods helped me advance successfully in this area, I have developed straightforward methods for identifying harmonic intervals and chords by ear.

I have 13 straight years of experience on the instrument. My firm grasp on various techniques, such a finger-tapping, legato, & tremolo picking allows me to successfully advance the technique of beginning & intermediate guitarists. I also have extensive knowledge of modes, chord-structures, dynamics, and rhythm. My musical education at UC Berkeley further bolstered my technical abilities on guitar by giving me an extensive knowledge of music theory, which I incorporate into my lessons.

Music Theory

My UC Berkeley Music education covered both diatonic & chromatic harmony, starting with the 4 part chorals of Bach to the advanced chromatic compositions of Chopin and Brahms. My knowledge of harmony allows me to cover subjects such as chromatic modulations, pivot chord modulations, and secondary dominants. I work to understand the students' perception of the material in order to teach new material in the most straightforward way possible.

Sight Singing

My Bachelor's in Music from UC Berkeley involved 4 years of Musicianship, which heavily involved sight singing and culminated in dissonant harmonic compositions that I performed with classmates. Having learned from my own experiences practicing sight singing, I know how to effectively teach the subject in a way that is non-stressful and productive.
