Dear Parents and Students:
I welcome the opportunity to help you master environmental and earth sciences. My educational credentials consist of a master's degree in Geology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a certificate in hazardous materials management from the University of California at Santa Cruz Extension Program.
My professional experience includes 22 years working a Senior Environmental Scientist at SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. At SRI, I lead many projects analyzing the potential environmental consequences from development of radars, weather stations, navigation aids, weather stations, fisheries laboratories, and atmospheric research facilities located throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, and Pacific Islands. These studies focused on the finding the most effective and environmentally benign locations and designs for these facilities. I also helped SRI's Center for Technology in Learning develop an interactive curriculum using Geographic Information System (GIS) software to teach meteorological principles and climate change at the secondary school level. That work was funded by the National Science Foundation and the curriculum is currently being tested at High Schools in California and New York.
My expertise covers the environmental and earth science topic areas contained in AP Environmental Science curriculum. To teach these subjects,we will start with basic scientific principles and then apply those principles to quantify and analyze current environmental challenges, such as climate change, geologic hazards, and water shortages. We will then use the same scientific knowledge to critically asses the feasibility of potential solutions. We will use GIS software and on-line modeling programs to learn, so access to a PC is essential. I tutor students in the following topic areas:
Earth Systems -- plate tectonics, rock formation, mineralogy, soil formation, geohazards (volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, slope failure)
Atmospheric science -- layers of the atmosphere, solar radiation, wind, precipitation, barometric pressure, weather vs. climate, greenhouse gas emissions, measurement and dispersion of air pollutants, climate change theory and modeling
Water Systems -- hydrologic cycle, coastal processes, river dynamics, groundwater recharge and depletion
Energy Flows and Sources -- conservation of energy, sources, solar energy, hydropower, geothermal, nuclear, fossil fuels
Humans - demographics, resources use, carrying capacity, standards of living
Policies and Regulations - state and national laws and regulations, pollution control, environmental impact analysis, international treaties
