Hi!

I currently teach 11th grade English, language arts, and creative writing at a private school catering to kids who are gifted, but have a range of learning disabilities including Aspergers, high functioning autism, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, and, dysgraphia. My experience in this type of learning environment has helped me tailor curriculum and assessment to meet a vast array of challenges, especially with reading comprehension and writing. My previous teaching experience (20 years) was at the university level, teaching and mentoring students in several different departments always with an emphasis on critical reading, thinking, and writing.

My personal philosophy is that learning is best achieved when there is a mutual respect developed between teacher and student. Learning is first and foremost, a two way street, and over the years I have learned as much from my students as they have learned from me! The only way to accomplish this is through patience, understanding, and caring.

ADD/ADHD

I currently teach at a school that specializes in kids with ADD/ADHD. Over the past six years I have attended conferences, been part of professional development seminars, and worked with Ed. therapists and school psychologists, to better understand the impact of this type disorder on the learning process.

Study Skills

As a high school teacher at a school that caters to kids with ADHD, Aspergers, high functioning autism, and other learning disabilities, I deal with study skills, organization, and executive functioning on a daily basis. I work with students on how to effectively prepare for weekly tests and final exams. I also prepare students to write essays using scaffolding and other "chunking" techniques to break the larger task into smaller manageable components in order to facilitate task completion. These strategies are very helpful to students struggling with study habits, as it helps them manage workloads that often seem unmanageable.

Great writing tutor (and prof. teacher) who connects well with my ADHD son — Irwin teaches creative writing and English to teens with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder and he understands how to work with my son, who struggles with abstract SAT-style essays. He's also funny and personable. We've had two lessons now and my son has completed a structured 2 page essay that makes logical points and reads coherently, which is a giant improvement to his past work. I especially li ...
