English

I have taught English for 40 years and specialize in writing skills. Working one-on-one with students allows their own individual voices to emerge to express their thoughts and feelings coherently and effectively.
I have taught English at both the high school and the college level, 38 years in the USA and two years overseas in the Peace Corps. The subjects I taught have a wide range: English Literature, American Literature, World Literature, Creative Writing, Mythology, Science
Fiction, Greek Drama, Greek and Roman Comedy, and English 101 and 102 and Business English on the college levels.
As part of the English department, I also taught Public Speaking for ten years. My experience has been varied and productive.

ESL/ESOL

Teaching English as a second language was part of my training in the Peace Corps. I taught university classes where students were on various levels of competency, from middle to fluent speakers. In the summers, I taught adults who were seeking to improve their English skills, both in writing and conversation.

Grammar

As an English teacher for 40 years, I incorporated the teaching of grammar into my teaching of essay writing, demanding that my students adhere to correct grammatical rules and usage. Common sense was the guideline. Clarity of expression was the goal.

Literature

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught all areas of literature at the high school and college levels, including American,English, and dramatic literature. My teaching method is based heavily on the dramatic presentation of literature, making it come alive for the student.

Proofreading

As an English teacher, I have proofread tons of essays and term papers from students and have also worked on theses for other teachers. In the public sector, I have proofread three books for publication by the authors.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking at a high school for some twelve years. In the private sector, I have tutored aspiring actors in speech skills. My approach is to use acting methods in voice projection and delivery.

Reading

As an English teacher, I have worked on reading with students for content and understanding before they wrote their essays based on the literature. My approach to make the reading come alive is to use dramatic, conversational concepts and to mine the students' knowledge of the subject as well as provide questions that will stimulate new thoughts.

SAT Reading

For several years, I taught weekend SAT preparation courses. As department chair of an English Department, I made it mandatory for teachers to use past SAT tests for practice exams in classes and used these exams in my own honors classes.

SAT Writing

I have tutored students in writing essays preparatory to taking the SAT. I have my own method of teaching writing, and it has been successful over the many years I have been teaching.

TOEFL

When I joined the Peace Corps, I spent three months being trained in TOEFL techniques before teaching on the university level for two years in Bratislava, Slovakia. I also taught summer session classes to both students and adults and tutoring sessions for adults wanting to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the English language.

Vocabulary

I have taught English for 40 years, emphasizing writing skills, and an integral part of that is developing students' vocabulary. Knowing how to read well is also part of that process. I encourage students to seek words that help color their thoughts and convey their ideas coherently and effectively.

Writing

When I was department chair of the English Department at my high school, I made writing the top priority in all classes. I taught senior English for twenty years there, and my students always did well in their college classes when it came to writing essays. I used my own rubric to facilitate the process. When I taught on the college level for twenty-five years, again I emphasized the development of coherent, creative, effective essays. I still hear from former students telling me how being able to write well has helped them in their careers after college.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
