I hold a Ph.D. and M.A. in History, and a B.A. in Philosophy, all from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). My writing, both creative and academic, has been published professionally. I also received a perfect score on the verbal section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the standardized qualifying exam for graduate school. I am, therefore, in a good position to help students college-aged and younger to improve their writing and to better perform on homework and tests in subjects such as history, political science and literature. I am also comfortable working with students in mathematics at the level of algebra and below. I have good communication skills and enjoy working with young people. As a teaching assistant at UCLA, I taught students at the classroom and individual levels and received excellent student reviews. I also have ample tutoring experience, having worked with students ranging from the son of a high-level diplomat to the United States to troubled inner-city youth through the Los Angeles Unified School District's Program for Youth who are Neglected, Delinquent, or at Risk of Dropping Out. When it comes to the subject of US History, my son SWEARS by Matthew's tutoring and teaching techniques. Guaranteed results. Highly recommend him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a PhD in history and a BA in philosophy, both from UCLA. I worked as a substitute teacher in elementary schools for several years in my twenties, including the Berkeley Unified School District, Pasadena Unified School District, and Los Angeles Unified School District. This included a number of long-term assignments (e.g. one month, four months) that required me to prepare several weeks' worth of curriculum at a time. I am well qualified to work individually with elementary school children, and I enjoy doing so!
I have taught SAT Reading for several years, including for some of the big test prep companies. I achieved a perfect score on the reading section of the GRE (the grad school version of the SAT), and am a professionally published author. So I know how to teach reading comprehension!
Having received my PhD from UCLA, I know something about time management and study skills! I have worked with many students over a number of years. Whether at the elementary, high school, or college level, my tutoring has frequently involved helping students to make better use of their time and to improve their study habits. Doing so aids them in every subject. A recent high school student of mine shifted his American history grade from C to A, strictly by applying my study skills recommendations.
