Hello Parents and Students!
My name is Kathryn, I'm a graduate of Florida International University. I hold a bachelor's degree in mass communication as well as psychology, with a focus in child and adolescent psychology. I've taught for a private tutoring company for two years and on my own as a private tutor for seven years.
I teach early literacy (phonics, early stages of writing and pronunciation, beginning reading) to 4 and 5-year-olds, elementary school reading, grammar, science and social studies. I also have extensive experience teaching high school AP classes (in preparation for the AP exams) of the following subjects: World History, English I and English II, Psychology, U.S. Government & Politics, and Human Geography, among others. I'm also very comfortable with biological (non-chemistry based) sciences.
Reading comprehension, vocabulary and essay writing/preparation are all strong focuses of mine, and I'm great with getting kids and teens to understand ways of reading and writing better and at their grade level. Research papers are also a piece-of-cake!
Please contact me for any questions you may have!
I am qualified to teach all subjects in Elementary Education, Grades Pre-K through 6th grade because of my extensive experience with children of those grade levels. I have vast experience with the Phonics Reading system for all grades, as I use Phonics materials, books and flash cards to help my beginner and intermediate level students to Read at their highest level. I am skilled at teaching Pronunciation for students who may have been raised speaking another first language other than English. I am very familiar and confident with all types of Math Programs that are given to the students between the ages of 4 and 13 (this includes Chicago Math system that is used in various schools here in Miami), as well as the newest techniques being used to teach student different ways of multiplying and dividing (lattice multiplication, partial products, partial quotients methods, etc).
As students at these young ages are just beginning to step into their first Science or laboratory classes, I also display good knowledge about how to teach with patience and have a way of explaining things to the children that make them understand more clearly what is being said in the text (this may mean showing them mini-science- experiments or worksheets to explain the processes that go on in Science). My best is displayed in my current student's progress, shown when a student who has never made the honor roll finally does for the first time, and when my 4 year old Pre-K students who were once not up to par, are being told that they now know how to read at a 1st or 2nd grade level. I am definitely qualified for teaching Elementary school education, and I only hope that you will allow me to help your child reach their full potential.
I've taught early literacy based in phonics for four years to four and five-year-olds, and have taken numerous courses in college on early childhood education as well as child psychology to complete my psychology degree at Florida International University. I can also provide parental references.
I have taught world history at the Advanced Placement level to several high school students for four years.
