Teaching English as a second language was part of my training in the Peace Corps. I taught university classes where students were on various levels of competency, from middle to fluent speakers. In the summers, I taught adults who were seeking to improve their English skills, both in writing and conversation.
As an English teacher for 40 years, I incorporated the teaching of grammar into my teaching of essay writing, demanding that my students adhere to correct grammatical rules and usage. Common sense was the guideline. Clarity of expression was the goal.
I have a Master's degree in English and have taught all areas of literature at the high school and college levels, including American,English, and dramatic literature. My teaching method is based heavily on the dramatic presentation of literature, making it come alive for the student.

As an English teacher, I have worked on reading with students for content and understanding before they wrote their essays based on the literature. My approach to make the reading come alive is to use dramatic, conversational concepts and to mine the students' knowledge of the subject as well as provide questions that will stimulate new thoughts.
For several years, I taught weekend SAT preparation courses. As department chair of an English Department, I made it mandatory for teachers to use past SAT tests for practice exams in classes and used these exams in my own honors classes.
I have tutored students in writing essays preparatory to taking the SAT. I have my own method of teaching writing, and it has been successful over the many years I have been teaching.
When I joined the Peace Corps, I spent three months being trained in TOEFL techniques before teaching on the university level for two years in Bratislava, Slovakia. I also taught summer session classes to both students and adults and tutoring sessions for adults wanting to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the English language.
I have taught English for 40 years, emphasizing writing skills, and an integral part of that is developing students' vocabulary. Knowing how to read well is also part of that process. I encourage students to seek words that help color their thoughts and convey their ideas coherently and effectively.
When I was department chair of the English Department at my high school, I made writing the top priority in all classes. I taught senior English for twenty years there, and my students always did well in their college classes when it came to writing essays. I used my own rubric to facilitate the process. When I taught on the college level for twenty-five years, again I emphasized the development of coherent, creative, effective essays. I still hear from former students telling me how being able to write well has helped them in their careers after college.
