Anatomy

Although I am not a scientist, I am an fascinated student of the human body. This interest began when I took my first anatomy course in high school, and continued with a great human biology class in college. Most science classes, including anatomy, have numerous unfamiliar terms, and my techniques for memorizing and learning the various systems work for many students. These include developing mnemonics, drawings and detailed flash cards. It may sound simple, but it works!
I look forward to working with you to succeed in this class.

Bible Studies

I have been a Christian for most of my life, and read the Bible daily. I have been an elder in one church, a founding member of another, and am now being tapped by the Senior Pastor of a third to joinhis leadership team as Executive Pastor (for business-related ministries). I believe the Word of God to be truthful and beneficial for all people.

CBEST

I studied for and passed the CBEST on my first try more than 20 years ago. I have been teaching in the public schools as a longterm substitute and full-timer throughout the intervening years. I have also helped other professionals work on their skills, especially in writing and English, before taking the test themselves. I can assist men and women with the variety of published tools available to help them prepare for this important test.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary school for many years, and especially enjoy third through sixth grade. I am especially familiar with all California content standards in these grades, and can help any student reach his or her maximum potential in all elementary curriculum. In addition, I am familiarizing myself with the Common Core standards that will be implemented throughout California schools within the next two school years.

English

I have two decades worth of experience in writing, mostly as a daily reporter/journalist for local newspapers and television stations. I also have been coaching and teaching writing to adult university students at University of Phoenix for the past three years. I have broken down writing into a formula that I am sure can be learned, practiced and applied to all formats.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint for many years, both as a student in the Master's program at Gonzaga University and as a teacher at the University of Phoenix. I encourage my students to create presentations such as these often, and have developed a good eye for what works in a slide presentation. PowerPoint is effective when combining text and graphics to visually impress your audience. Let me show you how to make it work for you.

Public Speaking

I am a former television reporter and anchor who has given numerous public speeches to civic organizations and at training conferences. I have been trained in public speaking since my high school years, and have given talks to groups that range in size from 10 to 2,000. I also teach at University of Phoenix on a weekly basis. I am able to help students develop clear outlines, provide detailed stories and analysis, and avoid distractions and nervous habits. Public speaking is a real strength of mine.

Reading

Once I was introduced to books that grabbed my attention and held on, I became an avid reader. This happened in college, and has been a focus of my life in the 30 years since. I have taught people to read and shown them interesting stories that relate to their interests and passions. This, I believe, helps people become avid readers, who will in the future venture into different topics. Plus, I have been a writer for many years. Currently, I teach a variety of classes at University of Phoenix. I have also taught in public and private K-12 schools for more than 20 years.

Social Studies

I taught junior high social studies (World History from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Enlightenment) for two and a half years. I have taken numerous college courses in various social studies - from psychology to the sociology of sport and ethics. My research skills are excellent in providing students current scholarship concerning the eras they are studying.

Study Skills

As a junior high school teacher, I have taught study skills for several years. The tricks that I have employed are not necessarily new-school; in fact, many strategies are quite old-school. But they work. These include test-taking strategies and simple homework strategies. They have proven to be successful for more than 20 years. Some of my former students that are now in high school have remarked that they were very well prepared for the rigors of high school because of how I taught them to prepare and study. I will teach the same strategies to any student I work with who is struggling with this important aspect of academics.

Swimming

I have been a competitive swimmer for more than four decades, and will take part in the Pacific Masters Championships next month. I have coached swim teams for several years, developed numerous workouts for competitive swimmers, triathletes and recreational swimmers. I have taught many youngsters how to swim. This has been my sports of choice for more than 40 years.

Theatre

I have appeared on-stage in more than 20 local theatrical productions - drama, comedy and musical - and directed three shows. I have also directed youth theatre on several occasions, including a world-premier "Creature Concert" in 1999. I spent four years on the board of directors for my local theatrical company.

Video Production

My undergraduate degree is in Broadcast Communications from San Francisco State University. I spent nearly five years in TV production, on both sides of the camera and editing bay. I was a reporter and anchor at four television stations in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I have made several personal videos with computer software; and helped edit numerous others. I understand videography, sound and editing.

Writing

I have two decades worth of experience in writing, mostly as a daily reporter/journalist for local newspapers and television stations. I also have been coaching and teaching writing to adult university students at University of Phoenix for the past three years. I have broken down writing into a formula that I am sure can be learned, practiced and applied to all formats.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
