Photography

Sales of digital SLR's (Single Lens Reflex Cameras) have gone wild. They are a fast, instant gratification tool in today's photography. But with the speed and storage allowed in the digital domain, something has been lost. Discipline.

Photographers used to be very thoughtful before snapping off the next picture, or roll of film. The process of waiting for the prints was so painful that everything was thought out ahead of time. Not anymore. With the ability to see and adjust the settings in an instant, often young photographers are snapping along willy-nilly to call whatever they shoot "art". This photographer can teach a photo enthusiast what to think about long and hard and bring discipline back to the art. It makes for more thoughtful work, and arguably more interesting photographs.

Video Production

Thirty years of producing short corporate documentaries, music videos, documentaries, spots and a host of other videos means I've made a LOT of mistakes.

Sometimes it's in the way I asked the questions during the interview. Other times it was not preparing the proper visas or carne's before entering a communist country. There have been dramatic wastes of money on a scene that should have never been shot, and brief brushes with brilliance because the only choice was to start rolling film as the sun had already set ... and magically the best shot of the day made the final cut of the program.

I can teach everything from developing the story (no matter how short or long) to building a light kit from a hardware store to editing the rough through final cut of the show. I've had enough feedback from clients to know what is likely to be thrown out with the bathwater, before the baby makes his first splash.

And ... I'm still learning. That is to say, you're only as smart as your last shoot, because that was when your most recent mistakes were made. Smarts and improvisation, flexibility and good planning and a commitment to enjoying your work are just some of the tools that make a difference when producing a video.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
