I tutored and taught English to students in grades K-8 at a private elementary school in San Francisco for 3 years. I have worked in an after-school program working one-on-one with elementary school students in English, Math, Art, and Sports. I approach every tutoring session with patience, kindness, and always bring books and prompts to get my students jump-started if they are not working on homework.
In my many years working with elementary school students, I spent a lot of time working with students who struggle with math. From simple addition, multiplication, to fractions and word problems, I've developed fun approaches that make math come alive, including singing, coloring, and using math in real life situations. These methods have been very successful for my past students.
I love teaching, especially English reading and writing! In my ten years as a tutor and instructor, I've taught all grade levels including elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Most notably, I served as Head English Instructor through AACE Upward Bound of San Francisco and as a writing coach at San Francisco State University and Berkeley City College. As a writing tutor, I provide direct feedback and helpful suggestions on all types of essays, including academic and admissions essays.
I know how hard grammar can be for writers at every stage. With a background in editing and publishing, I am adept at spotting and fixing grammar problems, and providing tools to students so they develop this skill on their own. I've worked with ESL students and native speakers alike.
I scored in the 98th percentile on the verbal and writing sections of the GRE. I am excellent at advising GRE essays and improving test-taking skills for the written and verbal reasoning section.
I hold a BA in English Literature from U.C. Berkeley and graduated with high honors. Berkeley's English Department is ranked the #1 in the United States. My area of specialty is 19th and 20th century American literature, particularly African American literature and 20th century poetry and fiction. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and can also help you workshop your fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.
I am a published author and editor-in-chief of an international literary journal, for which I read thousands of written submissions every year. I also worked in professional publishing for several years, during which time I became an expert proofreader. I can teach you proofreading skills that you'll use in school, at work, and in life!
I really enjoy working with students as they prepare for the SAT in reading and writing. I can teach you tools and simple tricks to improve in reading comprehension, sentence completion, and vocabulary. I can work with you on sample tests and coach you on answering better and faster-- to maximize your confidence and your score.
I began my Spanish coursework in 8th grade and completed the Spanish honors track through high school. I went on to take college level Spanish courses and through that process, I developed reading and conversational skills. I continue to read, write, and translate Spanish, and I can help struggling students get the basics down and learn to hold conversations in Spanish.
I have worked with elementary school students for many years on one-on-one tutoring and as a classroom teacher. Specifically, I worked with resource specialists to provide study skills and basic skills instruction to students of all abilities who needed either a lot or a little help. At Jefferson Unified School District and at Brandeis Hillel Day School, I provided 4 years of study skills tutoring to special needs students. I can work with gifted students as well as those with learning disabilities.
I've developed excellent vocabulary lists and learning methods for high school English students. I can teach you methods that will gradually help build a wide and varied vocabulary that comes naturally.
