I am a graduate student in medieval and early modern history. I am writing a dissertation on an early eighteenth century Italian rabbi named Samson Morpurgo. I did my coursework at The Ohio State University, though I now live with my wife in South Pasadena. I taught at the university level as well as high school so I understand what it takes to make the transition from one to the other. My method of tutoring focuses on methodology in analyzing texts as opposed to the brute memorization of facts. Because I have a background in a lot of different topics I tend to allow lessons to move over a wide range of fields, depending on what interests the students. This serves to engage a variety of students on their own terms. In a sense, what I offer is a theatrical performance in which I open up my own inner thinking process about a given topic and in turn invite students to join in this performance. I have in the past conducted my classes as book clubs in which students voted on books to read and I worked my lessons around these books. I believe that this method can be particularly valuable for the smaller more intimate setting of tutoring. Ultimately, I like to see myself as a living resource that students can use to help them connect to the world of books and of private reading where the true process of education lies. I would finish by noting that I have particular experience in dealing with special needs students such as those with Asperger's Syndrome.
