The magic of teaching for me is that "Aha" moment experienced by my students -- primary, intermediate, middle and high school students as well as adults -- who show in their smiles and eyes they grasp the material. It's magical. I have taught phonics, reading skills, literature, vocabulary, spelling, writing and computer skills. I believe in learning about yours or your child's needs first, and then coming up with a plan that works for both of us. Collaboration is my approach to tutoring.
When preparing students for tests, I believe working with them on test-taking strategies so they are 'smart' test-takers; they maintain their confidence-level during a test; and they know how they best prepare for a test. After all, we each learn differently. Over the years, I have prepared students for their classroom test and have prepared 8th graders for the verbal and reading sections of the HSPT.
As a classroom teacher, I have taught grammar, writing, spelling, writing, reading and literature. My goal in preparing lesson plans is to introduce material in ways that are engaging and relevant. Thus, when teaching literary terms such as allusion, simile, and personification, I will turn to everyday examples in advertising, u-tube and movies. And, I tap my students' energy by challenging them to create their own individual and group examples so they can facilitate their own learning.
I have tutored children who desire assistance because they are self-motivated for the "A", as well as I have helped children with special needs such as ADHD, dyslexia and autism. I have worked with second graders and adults to improve their phonics skills; intermediate students to understand their literature assignments, and middle school children to complete their homework tasks in social studies, language arts, and science.
I have taught computer classes for grades first to 8th at two different schools, where I introduced students to Word formatting, PowerPoint and Podcasts.
I look forward to our first conversation to discuss your and/or child's needs, and to launch our education collaboration!
