My philosophy for life and education run on parallel roads. I believe the teacher or tutor's role is to educate, train and inspire a student to be less sponge and more active and participatory self educator. Process and product are equally important. The ultimate goal of education is to use knowledge for the good of the community and the world so I strive to teach thinking along with the subject. I want children to love school.
I believe the arts are an important part of academia because the fuller the brain the greater the overflow. By diversifying a child’s cultural portfolio, we increase the level of understanding of others, and scope of options thus giving students a greater insight into the need for creative solutions to life’s challenges. To help assure constructive problem solving, multi-cultural reading material will be used when applicable.
A “fast food” culture often includes “fast food” thinkers. I search for ways to build on individual strengths through Multiple Intelligence Strategies which enhance individual uniqueness and gifts. I want children to want to learn, not just have to learn.
“Whatever You Do, Make an Art of It” was the motto of my art school, The Children’s Art Center where students actually created and published a comic book. At Santa Cruz Gardens School I ran a student publishing center which incorporated many language arts skills (i.e. writing, grammar, penmanship, etc.). The contribution of these books towards a child’s recognition of his or her own potential was enormous.
My BA is in Liberal Studies/Creative Arts from SJSU and my K-12 multi-subject BCLAD credential from Chapman Univ. I was the recipient of the San Jose State Drama Dep’t. Kaucher-Mitchell Fellowship for Storytelling and Oral Interpretation, and I include good speaking skills along with Language Arts and reading help. I’m mid-way to my MaT. at Chapman University. I’ve taught, tutored (and even coached soccer) in local schools for 25 yrs. and raised all four of my children here. K-6 is my preference.
See you soon!
I have been a Christian for 30 years, and have attended numerous Bible studies over the years, tutored and led Bible studies, and completed countless hours of written and graded assignments at a University level. I am willing and able to take any exam you'd like, as well as provide references from appropriate sources. The fact that I am a Christian will NOT be a reason to evangelize nor promote my viewpoint, but it does give me long term quality of engagement with, and a deep rooted love of, the Book.
Art has been a huge part of my life. I graduated from Music and /art HS in New York, with Art as my major, and my original degree is a BA in Creative Arts. I also owned an art school for many years, and have done both large and small projects with children and adults, including public murals, window painting(s), and more. I will gladly provide samples of my work and references if requested.
Trust me...I'm GOOD!!
Hello future students.
I feel very qualified to assist you with all the language arts/reading/writing/grammar etc. for grades K-6 due to my personal and professional career spanning 35+/- years educating children. I've taught reading to children as young as three and helped educationally limited adults learn to read along with their children, in two languages. I love seeing the faces of my students when they suddenly "get it'.
I have a multiple subject credential for K-12,(though in math I feelbest upto about grade 5), and I've also passed challenge exams for single subject competency in spanish and art. I'm about half way to my MaT. and hope to have it finished by the end of 2110.My spanish is that of a native speaker as I spent twenty years of my life in Mexico, where my children were born.
More than any of this, I feel that my philosophy of meaning-based education gives me an edge. I look for techniques and strategies geared towards the individual's personal needs and interests. My approach is simple: introduce, teach, practice, assess, synthesize based on individual application. This is not a "fast food" approach, but the results will last longer
and will equip each student to stay interested in learning.
As a professional Spanish/English Interpreter I not only have a complete command of the language, but bring the extra piece to teach the language effectively...the spoken/conversational
component which enhances the ability to think in the language being learned.
Highly effective for committed students.
