ACT Math

I equip my students with strategy so they learn how to quickly tackle the different kinds of questions typically seen on ACT Math. I provide tools that work from techniques for multiple choice questions, to methods for translating equations to graphs and vice-versa, to creative ways to tackle word problems.

Algebra 1

For many, Algebra I & II is where the struggles begin. But it need not be scary and difficult. Often times the issue is with earlier concepts that were not mastered with confidence. I will help by explaining concepts in plain English. And I help students to learn to see concepts and problems in a way that makes sense to them.

Algebra 2

For many, Algebra I and II is where the struggles begin. But it need not be scary and difficult. Often times the issue is with earlier concepts that were not mastered with confidence. I will help by explaining concepts in plain English. And I help students to learn to see concepts and problems in a way that makes sense to them.

American History

American history is one of my favorite subjects. My family has deep roots in the history of our country going back to colonial times and extending out to homesteading in the Midwest and to the Gold Rush days of California. I grew up hearing stories from these different time periods. I love to share that perspective with my students as we establish ways to know and remember history. I also offer experience preparing students for the AP US History exam.

Calculus

Everyone can learn Calculus. It’s a great tool and a big confidence booster when you can master this subject. The concepts behind Calculus are actually simple and few in number. But they are often introduced in ways that seem complex and confusing. I will help explain the concepts and terms in simple English and with everyday examples.

CBEST

One of my former students was preparing for the CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers). I helped her, especially with the math section, so that she successfully passed her exam in July 2013. In so doing, I helped her overcome a long-term condition of dyscalculia.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker, but having lived abroad for over 10 years and having traveled for work extensively, I learned to speak English in a clear, proper and enunciated manner -- so that I could be better understood. This experience guides and inspires my efforts to help others who are learning English/ ESL.

Geometry

In a sense, Geometry is misnamed. On the surface, it appears to be focused on angles, lines, polygons, circles and arcs and how they relate. But at the heart of the subject is a Greek system of logic. Understanding this and how it works is the key to mastering Geometry.

Macintosh

I am a long-time Apple fan and familiar with the full range of Apple products. They are beautifully designed tools that are very intuitive to learn.

I also have experience tutoring Seniors to master the basics so that they feel comfortable to enjoy the great options and access to applications that Mac products offer - from useful Apps, iPhoto and iTunes to the range of Microsoft products for Macs.

Prealgebra

This is the foundation for advanced Math. Building confidence in the concepts introduced here and the ways to express them is critical.

Precalculus

Understanding Precalculus and Trig concepts need not be daunting. They can be explained in simple terms and there are ways to remember key concepts. This can be a fun subject when the student has confidence about the basics.

SAT Math

I equip my students with strategy so they learn how to quickly tackle the different kinds of questions typically seen on SAT Math. I provide tools that work from techniques for multiple choice questions, to methods for translating equations to graphs and vice-versa, to creative ways to tackle word problems.

Trigonometry

Understanding Precalculus and Trigonometry concepts need not be daunting. They can be explained in simple terms and there are ways to remember key concepts. This can be a fun subject when the student has confidence about the basics.

World History

Besides studying World History on the side at university and then doing my own study and reading ever since, I have experienced first hand the "living history" that one can pick up by traveling, exploring and talking with and living with local people. In the course of my work, I have traveled to over 30 countries - in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, and have lived in four of them for cumulative nearly 10 years. I have also tutored for the AP World History Exam as well as for courses in pre- and post-1600 World History.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
