Hi, chemistry students,

This (2014) will be my second year as a tutor on wyzant.com. I have a lot of experience teaching chemistry including high school level chemistry. I also know that my students like me and think I am helpful and funny, a thing you might experience yourself.

I have a master in science degree from Cal. State Long Beach (2013). As a part of the college’s program I was offered a position as teaching associate. Since spring 2011, I have taught 6 chemistry classes including 3 Chem101 classes which are practically high school level chemistry courses. I was given the additional responsibility of teaching several general chemistry and analytical chemistry laboratories and seminars.

My experience as an undergraduate college level chemistry instructor goes back to 2008, back in my home country. There, I taught two courses of pharmaceutical chemistry laboratories in which I have an MS degree. My undergraduate degree and my first master's degrees are in pharmacy; at home, it is unlike the United States where you need a PharmD. degree to become a pharmacist. Many other countries require only a BS in pharmacy, which includes a lot of emphasis on chemistry. I personally took five chemistry related courses during my undergraduate studies and three more during my first graduate studies; this is not mentioning five years of chemistry classes in middle and high school

Now that I have taken even more chemistry courses, I can confidently say that I have covered the chemistry courses, both undergraduate and advanced, that are quite sufficient to make me a competent tutor in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and perhaps other disciplines of chemistry. Having a BS in pharmacy makes me a competent pharmacology tutor too.

Being a non-Muslim Arab, I can help you in learning Arabic and tutoring you in Arabic if you are taking it in college. I am an excellent translator with high proficiency in English and almost no accent. In general, I don’t expect any cultural barrier. I am completely Americanized.

Feel free to contact me via WyzAnt. I can arrange a public place for meeting with you, like a nearby library. I am also ready for in-home sessions within Long Beach city limits.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am a native Arabic speaker from Iraq. I was born in Mosul, an Arabic speaking city. My mother dialect is north Mesopotamian, which is somewhere between south Mesopotamian (Iraqi) and levanite (pan-Syrian). Most of my life I spoke south Mesopotamian since I lived in Baghdad.

I learned Arabic starting from primary school ending in high school, 12 years in total. During this time I studied grammar, dictation and Arabic literature.

I am fluent in English. The last time I took TOEFL I had a 99% percentile. I have translated tens of articles and video clips from English to Arabic since 2007.

I have general tutoring experience through this site. I am also a teaching associate at CSULB teaching general chemistry to undergrad students.

Organic Chemistry

I teach undergraduate level organic chemistry. I have finished more than ten undergraduate and graduate level courses, therefore I find my self quite competent in this field.

Courses taken during my undergrad studies

1-Organic Chemistry :two courses with lab work.

2-Organic pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry: three courses with lab work

3-Biochemistry: two courses with lab work

4-Advanced organic pharmaceutical analysis: one course with lab work

courses taken during my firs graduate studies (MS pharmacy)

1-Advanced organic chemistry: one course

2-Heterocyclic chemistry: one course

3- Spectroscopic identification of organic compounds: one course

4- Manual identification of organic compounds: one course

-My thesis project involved organic synthesis of peptides of expected physiological activity-

Courses taken during my second graduate study. MS chemistry

1-physical organic chemistry

2- Protein structure and function.

-My thesis project involves determining the kinetics of radiolytic elimination of certain organic chemicals in aqueous solutions.

earned 92% percentile in the standardized American Chemical Society (ASC) placement test in organic chemistry.

I will start teaching organic chemistry and biochemistry for nurse students this summer.

My teaching method will involve mnemonics , etymology of the chemical terms. and application of organic chemistry in every day life with minimum memorization. In this way the student interest in the subject will rise which I think will improve his understanding.

Pharmacology

I am a foreign pharmacy graduate certified from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. I have passed the FPGEE exam (109/150)

I have a BS and an MS in pharmacy.

I have studied pharmacy for 5 years and had three courses of pharmacology, one course in molecular pharmacology, a course in pharmacokinetics and in clinical pharmacokinetics, two courses in toxicology and two courses in pharmaceutical calculations. Beside these courses, I took many other courses that cover such pharmaceutical science disciplines as pharmaceutics, clinical pharmacy, medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy (herbal medicine).

I am also a licensed pharmacy technician from PHCB.

I have applied for a licensure to work as an intern pharmacist and a pharmacy technician in the state of California

Definitely knows his stuff — Anas knew organic chemistry very well and was very helpful the whole time. Even helped me with a chart to make things more simple and easy to remember. He also doesn't mind getting sent stuff early so that he's prepared when you meet. Very helpful and was definitely worth it. ...
