There is a general belief that math is a subject that you just "get." Some people have the brains for it, and some people don't. I believe that this is fundamentally untrue, and that anyone can master math skills as long as they are willing to put in the time and effort.

I had the worst time with math until algebra. After that, math made sense.

I've been a substitute teacher for the last decade. I enjoy the days I get to spend in math classes, and I love to see when a student finally "gets it." It's that one concept that the student has been struggling to understand. When the student finally understands it, math seems possible.

My goal is to help students “get it”. If that means explaining the same concept a few times, so be it. Many times, a student just wants someone around to tell them that they are doing the problems correctly.

Algebra 1

Algebra has an undeserved reputation for being a difficult subject. I think it's just misunderstood.

I've always found algebra to be kind of like a puzzle. You're given an expression, and you have to twist it and turn it to get to the solution that you need. There are so many ways to get there, and it's a challenge to figure out how to make it all work.

Algebra 2

This is algebra with a bit of bite. The good news is you got this far. Many students get as far as algebra 1 or geometry and then give up. You can do this.

Algebra 2 takes what you learned in algebra 1 and pushes it to a place you didn't know it could go. It was in algebra 2 that I knew that I could go on to figure out calculus.

The problems get longer, but you end up having to do fewer of them. And you will impress those that didn't get this far. You can do this. I can help...

Geometry

Geometry is about more than shapes. It's about how things fit together. It's about taking what you've been given and figuring out how to turn that into what you need to find.

I've always found test-taking to be easy. Know that you know the information. And relax.
