I have been a tutor for over ten years. I enjoy seeing a student's eyes light up when they begin to understand a new concept. No subject is too hard for a student, but each student needs to find their own way to master new concepts--That's my specialty: I match the learning style to the learner and from there students begin to take off! I have been a writer for many years, as well as an editor. I enjoy the teaching process which includes finding ways to simplify difficult concepts for students.

Being a public speaker with 30 years of experience, it is my joy to teach to incorporate the art of communication into the teaching of: English, grammar, spelling, writing U.S. and World History and American Government and ESL.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have taught history in junior high and high school for the last 12 years and my teaching has included both honors and AP history courses.

Bible Studies

I have been a teacher of Bible as a subject for over ten years in a school setting and over 30 years in church settings. I have an extensive knowledge of scripture and have served in Christian ministry for over 20 years. My students have gone on to attend Bible classes in college and have done well and many of my students were able to test out of beginning Bible classes at both the high school and college levels.

English

Having taught elementary school grammar, writing, spelling and vocabulary, as well as junior high and high school literature and writing classes (British and American Literature as well as Grade 9 and 10 English) my tenure in teaching these courses has spanned 14 years.

ESL/ESOL

I have been tutoring ESL and have ESL certification with Distinction from University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

Literature

I have a love for literature which I seek to share with my students. Teaching high school literature for 8 years has afforded me the opportunity to explore American, British and Shakespearean literature and understand how valuable these disciplines are to students. Engaging students in these studies by teaching them to apply critical thinking techniques always equips them with the tools necessary to decode or unravel the author's deeper messages within the texts. By studying the various techniques writers use to communicate their stories, we gain insight into the minds of these great communicators and students come to appreciate the craft of writing. Studying great literature requires analysis, which is a wonderful tool for any student to possess.

Public Speaking

I have been speaking publicly for over 30 years. I have coached debate and taught debate. I have tutored in this area for over five years and my last debate team won their final competition.

Religion

I have taught world religions for one year and have taught Christianity in respect to world religions as well. My knowledge of world religions is good and my ability to explain the nuances between them is excellent. I use graphs and charts as well as the many stories to explain the similarities and themes that are similar among religions as well as contrasting the differences.

Writing

I have been teaching for over 12 years and writing has been an integral part of my teaching expertise. I have extensive experience in both writing and editing and have been touted highly for my skills in these areas. My proficiency in the proper use of the English language has given me the proclivity to teach writing to students who are struggling to find their voice in this discipline. Developing a love of writing in my students brings me much joy.
