Because of your wish to study one of the most complicated languages in the world, I offer to you my deepest respect. At the same time, the Russian language has its own charm. It seems like an ocean...huge, beautiful, strong, rich and full of life. What a pleasure to sail on its waves with the wind in your face, knowing something new and growing in spirit will strengthen your body! Yet to be able to enjoy ocean life, one must first build a yacht that will allow him or her to become a friend to the ocean. The yacht is our knowledge of language; without it, any trip cannot be joyful and knowledgeable. The yacht cannot sail without a captain. With time, it will be you who will sail it, but for now, allow me to teach you how to steer it. Welcome aboard.
My name is Tanya. I was born in Russia and the Russian language is my native tongue. I completed my university studies with a B.S. degree in biology and received my PhD degree in philosophy, both in Russia. I have lived in the U.S. for ten years and I am married, with one daughter. In Russia, I worked as a professor of philosophy and biology and tutored students. So you see, your captain has at least 30 years of teaching experience.
On our yacht, I will raise a flag with a motto, “No movement ahead without mastering the previous material”. We will work for results. I do believe that a lesson must be varied, specifically how to read, write, and speak in Russian. Nevertheless, even these abilities by themselves are not enough to have a successful voyage. One needs to become familiar with an ocean as well: it specifics and character. In other words, one must realize that language is only a tool for obtaining knowledge about the culture of the country whose language is being studied. This is why a significant part of our lessons will be devoted to an introduction to Russian culture. Here, I often use a playful format. For example, we’ll cook “virtual” traditional Russian dishes, wear “virtual” Russian clothing from the time period of Peter the Great, and listen to “non-virtual” Russian folk music. For me, it is very important not only to give you knowledge, but to inspire your wish to obtain new knowledge that is more valuable. Your captain will try hard to make you love what you are learning. In our lessons, we will use as many senses as possible: vision, hearing, taste, and of course, the main sense that we will certainly use: our common love for and interest in Russia. It is a country of immense area and distances, picturesque natural beauty, diverse fauna and flora, skilled and creative people, and finally, its beautiful and rich language.
Again, welcome aboard!
