My first very successful experience tutoring was during high school. The son of a family friend was doing poorly in junior high school in math and English. On a volunteer basis, I helped him with these academic areas and he was able to improve his grades from failing levels to A's and B's in a relatively short period of time.
Recently, I've been tutoring grade 4 - 12 students in LAUSD schools in math and English. In addition to proficiency in these and some other subjects, I am adept at establishing a good rapport with each of my students and families. I am able to recognize when there may be external factors getting in the way of a student's concentration, and can address their concerns, thereby minimizing or eliminating the obstacle.
My most extensive training and experience has been in the fields of psychology and social work. I have a PhD level of education in the field of clinical psychology. Peter is outstanding! Peter was easy to get in touch with and his availability was great. He is very knowledgeable with the subjects that he is teaching. He is very prompt and patient. I would definitely recommend Peter to anyone.
Thank you for your 90 minute introductory computer tutorial for my 12 year old daughter. Your session was informative and easy for her to follow. She greatly enjoyed the experience and feels she is sufficiently prepared to learn more on her own about her laptop computer, which will be her valuable tool for school this Fall, where she will be entering junior high and her proficiency on a computer will be mandatory.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am well-familiar with the rules of chess, as I have been playing it since I was in 6th grade. I taught my father to play back then, and it quickly became an activity we frequently shared. I was a member of chess clubs twice; once in junior high school, and then again, as an adult. For awhile, I was a member of an organization that enabled us to play one another by mail.
I have had considerable recent success tutoring math and English for K-6 students for a company contracted with LAUSD. I am profifient in the elementary school academic areas of math, English (including reading, comprehension, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary), science, history (American and world), and social studies. My extensive postgraduate education enables me to have a good command of the curricula for these age groups. And, I enjoy working with children and invariably establish a good rapport with them and with their families.
I have always had a fairly logical mind. Logical, analytical thinking comes quite naturally to me. During my freshman year of college, at a time when I had some trouble adjusting to other collegiate level courses, I took Logic for the first time, as a subject, and got an A in it. I believe that a good command of logic is the basis for competence in the fields of math and science, including the science subfield of psychology, which has been my main pursuit, educationally and careerwise.
I first played volleyball in elementary school, but only became adept at it later, as an adult, with a group of friends and acquaintances in Central Park, in New York, where we played, weekly. A few times, Philippe Petit, the acrobat and subject of the acclaimed documentary, "Man on Wire", rode his unicycle to our group and played volleyball with us. Then, several years later, I played volleyball on a weekly basis in San Diego's Balboa Park with members of the Sierra Club. Volleyball has also been a sometime recreational activity at three full-time jobs I've had.
