As my favorite teacher once said so wisely about writing: "Apply the seat of the pants to the chair." Good writing may not be quite that easy but it is a place to start and a motto to adopt if one is to become a confident and competent writer.
I have been a professional writer and editor for many years and have guided other writers through their assigned tasks. I know how difficult it is to write and how hard it is to write what you believe in.
My methods are fairly simple. I look to address any problems or roadblocks a student may have regarding writing in general or with a specific assignment.
I like to get to know my students. What are their interests? What subjects, if any, do they like? What are their favorite and least favorite things to do?
A good writer can apply these ideas to their writing in the form of metaphors, hyperbole and anecdotes as a way to color their work and add dimension and personality to it.
As an editor, I ask my students to write and rewrite and to understand that a paper or an article is never really finished...it is only "due".
I demand that my students are readers. The more they read, the better writers they become. I currently work with businesses, corporate leaders, professional writers, bloggers, students and others looking for ways to improve their writing.
I love to write and believe that today especially, when so much of what we do whether by short text or Twitter notes, Facebook posts, personal blogs or academic assignments, writing is an essential form of communication.
I have coached children aged 6 to 14 in the skills associated with playing baseball. I have managed Little League and Pony League teams and taught hitting, pitching, fielding and baseball strategy to players. I personally played baseball and softball for many years. I have a great affinity for the game and understand the rules and regulations. Most importantly, I like working with kids and can help them not only hone their playing skills but educate them regarding the character-building aspects of the game.
I have coached a variety of basketball teams primarily made up of kids aged 6-12. I have a great understanding of how to play the game and personally participate in a regular weekend basketball game of my own. I can teach the primary skills associated with basketball as well as team and game strategies.
I am in the last term of receiving my Multi-subject teaching credential which will quality me as a K-6 teacher. I currently teach First Grade as part of my program.
I am an avid film buff who has taken courses in the subject at UCLA and has written about it for a variety of magazines. I have a vast knowledge of film history and understand how films are made, marketed and sold. As a professional writer and editor, I also grasp the effort it takes to write a story that is made into a film.
I hold a California Teaching Credential and have worked in the classroom as well as tutored many students in a variety of subjects.
I have a very good understanding of study skills, organization, oral language and history.
