In my prior career, I learned a lot about business and career development by being in professional sales for 15 years. I worked for companies in many different industries that ranged in size from 20 employees to a few thousand. After working for many start-up companies where they didn’t always succeed, I learned a lot about what makes a company successful versus one that isn’t.
Being part of a team that was trying to build a company from the ground up was hard work and yet was exciting and challenging. I learned what it was like to wear many different hats as an executive assistant while working in the entertainment industry to becoming an outside sales professional at various software and technology companies. From working in these different environments I had to learn how to interact and create mutually beneficial relationship with people in other departments such as research and development, marketing, legal, and technical support.
Being in sales was also a great training ground to learn how to speak in front of an audience and be comfortable with public speaking. I would be doing presentations sometimes in front of a small audience of five in a conference room all the way up to over two hundred people at trade shows and conferences regarding the products I was selling and representing.
Before becoming a certified coach, I also studied acting for eight years. I performed in short films, and in the theatre, increasing my capacity and range of dramatic as well as comedic work. During that time I also learned how to write monologues, scenes and dialogue between characters that would ultimately be performed by actors.
I’ve worked with elementary school kids and adults on the subjects of improving their reading speed and information recall, spelling, and vocabulary. I myself have a love for the English language and words, as I’m fascinated by how we communicate. I also love working with those of any age on their motivation for what they are doing and why it might be important to them. When people discover an easier way to do things, their confidence goes up and having self-esteem leads to self-mastery.
I also think it’s important to have creative outlets whether it’s expressing a creative talent as a career opportunity or doing it as a hobby. One of my passions is cooking. I had the pleasure of working with the Chef at the Culinary Classroom in West L.A. for over a year and took a six-month chef I program. I mostly cook at home and love discovering new recipes as well as figuring out ways I can alter them to my taste.
What also fulfills me is volunteering. I am a Founding Facilitator for a program called The World Academy for the Future of Women. I taught for 6 weeks in China where the program was piloted where I worked with the 75 participants on how to do “Powerful Presentations.” During that time there was also a two-day Women’s Symposium where I gave a speech to two different groups on how to create future memories. I coached the college students on writing their speech, editing their English, and how to deliver their presentations while engaging their audience.
I once heard a quote about how we are each other’s students AND each other’s teachers. Even though I have done educational sales, graduated from college, facilitated workshops and coached clients, above all, I myself am constantly learning. I see each new experience as an opportunity to grow and expand my own capacities from each new person I meet and work with. Thank you for reading my profile and I look forward to meeting you!
My experience in business mostly entails 15 years of Professional Sales experience working in the Corporate world. I have worked for large and small companies working in various roles and in a variety of industries. In the Entertainment Industry, I was an Executive Assistant at Metro Goldwyn Mayer for 3.5 years supporting the Sr. VP of Consumer Products. My Sales experience started with selling Canon copiers and fax machines within a geographic area in the Bay Area in Northern California. I went on to work at a small software company doing inside sales, speaking to companies all over the US, talking about a Training Administration Management System. I then worked for a number of Start-Up Companies as a Regional Sales Manager representing an array of technologies, some that were innovative and new at the time; such as biometric software, high speed internet access in hotel guestrooms, and a tiered web development system for school districts. My last position was as a Director of Sales selling to Realtors as a niche market. I did presentations in Real Estate offices talking about template websites and software that worked on Tablet PC's that made a Real Estate Transaction paperless.
I'm a Certified Professional Coach and have coached people on many aspects re: one's career apart from what I've learned from my own experience. I work with clients on resume writing, cover letting writing, and interviewing skills. I also provide coaching about preparing for job reviews as well as recovering from a bad job review. I've had much success on coaching individuals who turned themselves around from a bad job review after only a few weeks or months of coaching. After a shift in perception, attitude and energy around their job and coworkers, they ended up getting raving comments by their manager and other Executives who have noticed a difference in who they were being, their enthusiasm, and how they were interacting with others. I have also worked with clients on finding their purpose, having work they are passionate about, and developing new businesses. Once I go over SMART goals with clients, we put together a 3 month, 6 month, or 1 year plan in moving themselves forward with what they want to achieve.
What can I say, I'm a foodie at heart! I mostly cook at home, especially due to having some food allergies and dietary needs. I also appreciate eating out at restaurants to try things I wouldn't necessarily make at home or to get ideas as to what I too could prepare at home!
I took a 6 month Chef I program at the Culinary Classroom here in LA, starting with the basics of making stocks and chopping, to the specialties of making breads, pastas, soups, eggs, desserts, etc. I assisted the Chef at some privately booked parties as well for about a year.
At home I eat a mostly vegetarian diet and am well educated about sticking to a gluten free lifestyle. Although I am vegetarian and gluten free, I don't mind cooking meats or other things since they too provide eating pleasure for others. I love recipes and am not afraid of thinking outside of the box by altering recipes to cater to my own palette and preferences.
I was a nanny for 3 years after losing a job. It sustained me while I was going through my coaching certification program and developing my practice as a Certified coach. One of my responsibilities was working with the two kids, starting ages of 4 and 8 on their homework. The older one has ADHD and is on medication. I made sure that all of their homework was done prior to play time and coached them through the frustration and anxiety around homework. I taught the older one some NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Techniques that I am also certified in which supported her in bringing home the best report card she ever had. The biggest accomplishment was with spelling. When I first started working with her, she would get 8-12 right out of 20. It was fun being with her when she would tell me that because of the way I taught her to study her words, she would sometimes get 19 or 20 right. In working with them over those three years, I became familiar with homework ranging from Kindergarten through 6th grade.
When I think back to one of my first times as a "public speaker", it was as a dancer on stage from the age of 4 through the age of 18. I learned how to address my fear by being in front of audience while performing during my yearly dance recitals using tap, ballet, jazz or modern dance. During my Professional Sales Career I often had to do presentations in front of audiences talking about the various products I was selling; sometimes in front of up to 250 people at a trade show or industry related conferences. I am also a Founding Facilitator for the World Academy for the Future of Women, a program piloted at a University in Zhengzhou, China last year. I taught a four week module and was in China for a total of six weeks working with the program participants on "Powerful Presentations." I worked with them on the use of their voice (projection, pauses, articulation), body language, reading your audience, and overall confidence with presenting. I love teaching others about the four different types of listeners that might be in an audience, to make sure you capture the attention of all of them. The most effective way to deliver a speech or presentation is in a specific format that addresses those four types of listeners, which ideally will be done in a specific order.
I have always been a good speller and participated in spelling bee's growing up. I have experience working with Elementary school kids to help them improve their spelling skills. I am a Certified Neuro-Linguistic Learning Specialist and understand that we each perceive the world primarily through our senses. Depending on whether someone is Visual, Auditory, or Kinesthetic I can customize learning techniques so we utilize their strengths. I also have a great technique using flashcards and eye movement patterns, so they can learn spelling words by breaking them down into syllables, with each syllable written in a different color. One example is an ADHD child who would normally get 8-12 words right out of 20. After using this technique she was getting 19 and 20 correct.
I had studied and pursued acting for 8 years. During that time I was able to study with some working actors who also have a love for teaching. I was a member of two different Theatre companies where I performed in shows that were either established plays or newly written pieces; performing one acts and monologues. I am also a writer, having written a number of scenes, monologues and am currently working on a screenplay. My favorite part of acting is the character development and script analysis. It's not always about what's being said, there is power in moments of silence too. I have worked with kids and adults, and have helped friends work on audition pieces and preparation for performances.
