My name is Robert. I have recently relocated from Boston to Los Angeles to be closer to family.

I have a MFA in playwriting and an MA in mathematics because I am passionate about teaching and discovery. I have taught and tutored all ages from preschool through college, in all levels of biology, mathematics, physics, reading, and writing.

For the past five years, I was the in-house substitute teacher for students preschool through grade 6 at Lesley Ellis School. My nickname was “Wobert the Wascally Wabbit” because I'm silly, but also gentle, kind and dedicated. Substituting has made me comfortable with a wide range of students over a wide range of subjects. I am happy to provide parent and teacher references from Lesley Ellis.

My passion for learning stems from my firsthand experiences with students. In past summers, my students and I have counted trees, collected bugs, and banded chicks. This past winter we pruned trees with the Charles River Conservancy. In the spring, my Cambridge Science Festival exhibit let passers-by explore and imitate birdsong.

Working in these diverse environments has taught me how to guide children to discover and then to let them explore, how to teach a new idea and then get out of the way. In addition, my experiences as an actor and a playwright have taught me how to inspire students to uncover their own ideas and express them.

My goal is to get students excited about learning, the world, and the future. I truly appreciate your time. Thank you!

Algebra 1

I have taught and tutored Algebra 1 for high school and college students. In addition, I have written textbooks and study guides for Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

For the past five years, I have taught and tutored algebra as well as written and edited algebra textbooks, study guides, and test prep booklets.

Biology

I have worked as a field biologist in river systems, with captive and wild birds, and at zoos and aquariums. In addition to traditional tutoring, I taught biology to students K-12 in these natural and applied settings.

Reading

For the past five years, I have taught reading to students from preschool to grade 6 at Lesley Ellis School and as a private tutor to students of all ages. I work using phonics, prior knowledge, and experience to guide the student toward comprehension, independence, and mastery.

Trigonometry

I have taught and tutored trigonometry for the past five years. I have taught students in middle school, high school, and college in both pure math classes and applied settings, like physics.

Next, we move on to taking practice exams and developing strategies that are specific to taking these tests.
