Over 30 years of teaching/coaching various subjects/sports

I have experienced an interesting variety of activities. Such variety allows for a broader base from which to try to create interest and success in many subjects. The following are some of the highlights. I've been teaching and coaching since 1963, including Independent Study (all subjects) for several years. For two years I lived and taught (plus principal) in a south Pacific lagoon. There I SCUBA-dived with sharks while investigating sunken ships. I play trombone and euphonium in several concert bands. I sing (plus assistant director) in the Fresno-based Retired Teachers Association Chorus. During my 20 years of coaching at Fresno State I produced a national champion hurdler. I owned/operated a sandwich shop and an 80-acre raisin farm. I flew (commercial pilot license) an 85-horsepower plane from here across Canada and much of Alaska after having flown daily to Woodlake to teach. I rebuilt a plane (it took 3 years) that had gone down in the Sierras, including building(kit)a 720-channel navigation/communication radio - that worked! I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1924 Ford Model TT (truck). I was the area coordinator for MENSA (international high IQ society). I ran hurdles for 43 years during which I held several national and world records. I was inducted into an athletic hall of fame, awarded the "Distinguished Service to the Community" award by the local Chamber of Commerce, and honored as the "Alumnus of the Year" by the local high school. My wife and I have visited all 50 states. I really enjoy solving puzzles, including finding ways to get students to master various subjects. We surely can find common interests to discuss during lessons.

Algebra 1

Teaching Algebra has been one of my favorite things to do. There was a time (when I was a full-time high school math teacher) that I "knew" I could walk into an Algebra 1 classroom and by the time I reached the front of the class I could continue the lesson being given by the teacher. Grammar

Growing up I heard Mom (BA) and Dad (MA) use excellent and correct grammar daily. I was blessed to have two excellent English teachers. Before earning my MA I had to pass the Graduate Records Exam. In the English grammar section I scored more points than were necessary to be in the 99th percentile. Geometry

Geometry involves logic. For many students Geometry class is the first time they have had to think and reason to complete class assignments. We will work together solving problems step by step - with me asking leading questions to help you progress to each next step. We will keep the big picture in mind as we focus on each step until we solve each problem. I want you to enjoy the class without being nervous. We will build your confidence to that end.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra does not need to make you nervous. By asking you simple questions about each problem I will guide you through steps that will help you solve problems. As we work together you will become more and more able to ask yourself those questions that will help you solve problems. As your confidence grows your anxiety will fade and your success will increase. Let me help you build your confidence as you experience some successes in prealgebra.

Reading

For many years I read only what was assigned by my teachers. Then I happened to be assigned a book that caught my full attention. Reading that assigned book changed my attitude about reading. Ever since, I have enjoyed reading a variety of books. I now read for information, for humor, for pleasure, for history, or ?? As I get to know you I think we can find things for you to read that will enrich your life. Let's give it a try.

Writing

Writing includes the big picture of what you want to say. It also includes the smaller parts that make up that big picture. Combining those smaller parts in orderly fashioned paragraphs following rules of grammar can make your final result something your readers enjoy reading. We can add your personality to your writing to make it unique. Beginning with your imagination and facts you know or research we can prepare a written document you will be proud of. Let's get started.

English

My parents were college graduates who taught school. They used proper grammar always. I grew up hearing and using proper grammar. Then I was fortunate to have two super English teachers, one for 8th grade and one my senior year. Those two ladies made it a joy for me to read and write, and to create or edit bylaws or resumes. ACT Math

The ACT Math test includes 60 questions from 6 areas in math. The test questions are designed to see if you know how to solve each type of problem. The actual math calculations are not difficult. We will spend time going over different types of problems until you become proficient at plugging in the given information to solve for the answer. Track & Field

I was a successful decathlete, competing in our national championships. In the Masters Pan American Games held in Mexico City in 1976 I competed in 13 events and medaled in 12 (I was 4th in the 100). I ended my 43 years of Track & Field competition in 1995 by setting a world record in the hurdles, for which I was voted the Outstanding Track Athlete in the United States for my age group. Voice (Music)

Like many people I began singing in church. I sang in competitive choirs in high school, junior college and Fresno State, where I was a bass soloist. The director had 8 of us come to his home weekly and sight read lots of music so he could sort it. We sang those songs only once or twice - with accuracy. Football

I caught the first touchdown pass of my junior year football season in high school.

I coached a high school frosh team for several years. That included offense, defense, special teams, kicking game and quarterback. I scouted other teams for the varsity. I can help you become able to punt only turn-over spirals. I believe in mastering the basics. Proper form and efficiency are the foundation for success.

Tennis

The high school tennis team I coached won our league tournament. We were prepared both mentally and physically. I believe in mastering the basics and then applying them to the game. With the correct instruction you might just enjoy the game enough and be successful enough to continue playing tennis all your life.

Trombone

I began playing brass instruments in 1951. At Fresno State I took brass choir. That is when I first played Trombone. Currently I am first chair Trombone in the Sounds of Freedom Military Concert Band. I was lead Trombone in the prestigious Kingsburg Summer Band for several years. Whatever your level, we can progress.

Bible Studies

I have read the entire Bible. I am part way done in creating an outline of the Bible. I have taught Sunday School for youth and adults for many years. I have been teaching the little kids at church to recite all of the books of the Bible in order. I use a simple, but catchy tune to help them. I have used the Bible to prepare the 8 sermons I preached to our congregation, and the several funeral services I have performed. I have several different versions we can study.

Trumpet

I began playing brass instruments in 1951. I attended honor bands throughout my schooling including first chair. I currently play in several valley concert bands. I have my own band. I have a small group I gather to play in church several times each year. Whatever your level, we can progress.

Public Speaking

I have been speaking to groups all of my life. I spoke to my elementary school classmates after each interesting vacation (we all were surprised that octopi can be pink). As Student Body Vice-President in high school I emceed all of our assemblies. I even presented a magic show to the more than 800 students. CBEST

I was teaching full time when the CBEST first came out. I did nothing to prepare for the test. I simply took it and passed. My background in both math and English far exceeds the basics needed to pass this test. I have been a full time high school math teacher and a full time high school English teacher. I am ready to help you prepare to pass the CBEST.

Tax Preparation

Tax preparation requires filling in blanks. Careful reading produces accurate results. I have prepared my own taxes. I have also done tax returns for others. I taught high school students how to prepare tax returns. I want to help you prepare your taxes with much confidence and little anxiety.
