I'm a professional writer, editor, and artist committed to intellectual opportunities for children, teenagers, and young adults. Experiences in a variety of educational settings have supplied me with a treasure chest of teaching tools. I can identify and serve the unique learning needs of individual students.

I have a BA in art, an MA in interdisciplinary studies, and years of experience in art, publishing, and multicultural and environmental studies.

Besides helping students meet basic requirements in language skills and writing, I enjoy nurturing critical thinking and creativity. I support the student in moving beyond the basics into areas of personally meaningful excellence. I believe the future will be shaped by how well our next generation understands history, geography, psychology, ecology, and culture. It's delightful to help students acquire the skills to study effectively.

Algebra 1

I was an A student in algebra and enjoyed the subject. I even received a pin from the Mathematical Association of America. As a home schooling parent, I passed my skills and enjoyment to my own children and those of other families we studied with. I continue to use algebra in the kitchen and in my work as an artist, and appreciate its logic and beauty.

PSAT

As someone who aced this test as a student, I'm enthusiastic about helping others do well. A solid understanding of language and math skills, confidence about learning a range of subjects, and savvy about multiple choice testing all contribute to success on this test.

Study Skills

As a home school teacher of my own and several other children, I used many supportive strategies for enjoyable and efficient study. These covered a range of subjects and ages. Drawing

I've studied drawing at Antioch College, University of Oregon, and Pacific Art Institute. I've taught drawing at Amazon Community Center and Eugene Psychological Services in Eugene, OR; Orchard Charter School and Sebastopol Center for the Arts in Sebastopol, CA; and Willowside Middle School in Santa Rosa, CA. Painting

I've been painting watercolors, pastels, and acrylics for 3 decades. My work has been shown in numerous solo and group shows and is represented in collections in 25 states and 19 countries. I've taught painting to children and adults in public and charter schools, and at community and art centers, as well as private lessons.

Anthropology

I studied anthropology in college with a particularly inspiring professor and expert in his field. This course motivated a life long interest that I pursue with reading, discussion, and a overall perspective on historical and current issues. I'm particularly active in learning about indigenous cultures, and am knowledgeable about California Indians, especially the Pomo people. Art History

My knowledge of art history comes from my undergraduate work at Antioch College, where I majored in art; my graduate work at the University of Oregon, where my interdisciplinary MA included extensive art history course work; three years of work at the University of Oregon Museum of Art; and continuing study as an artist. I'm particularly knowledgeable about the French Impressionists, 19th and 20th century American art, Native American art, women's art, and Chinese and Japanese art.

Social Studies

I studied sociology, psychology, geography, and political science in college. I home schooled my own two children through middle school and offered social studies lessons to other home schooling students. The actual grade level of our studies was more advanced than public school curriculum for that age. I continue to read books and articles, and can be very supportive of student interests in this area.
