I'm a professional artist, an accomplished writer, and an expert in history and the humanities. I've had experience teaching at every level: elementary, high school, and adult. My rapport with students in each case has been exceptional. I bring an "old school" sensibility, and a broad intellectual and cultural perspective to my work.

My method consists of creating a combination of focus and stimulation that must, of necessity, be tailored to the needs of each individual. I'm committed to an enjoyable process of learning that derives maximum effort from positive reinforcement.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I'm an established portrait artist and classical realist, with a full-time working studio in Sausalito. I've been teaching drawing and painting in San Francisco and Marin County for well over a decade to students at all levels. My basic philosophy is to establish a sound fundamental approach, while encouraging the development of an individual style and a unique personal vision.I have a professional website with a comprehensive portfolio, and will happy to provide excellent references upon request.

Painting

I'm a professional oil painter of long standing, specializing in portraits and classical realism, but adept at different styles and mediums. I've been teaching for well over a decade, with outstanding results at all levels. I have a comprehensive portfolio available on my professional website, and can provide outstanding references upon request.

Religion

By "religion" I refer to the objective study of religion, which was my minor at Syracuse University. Religion is viewed in academic terms as the relationship that man has established, in all times and places, with the ultimate nature of his universe. The history and consequences of that relationship not only have profound implications worth studying, but also provide a fascinating platform for understanding ourselves and the world we inhabit. I conduct my lessons, from an historical and philosophical point of view, along these lines. My general experience as a teacher, combined with extensive knowledge of the field, qualifies me nicely in this subject.
