Drawing

I have a BS in Graphic Design with a Concentration in Illustration. I have taught children using "Drawing with Children" by Mona Brookes and "Draw Squad" by Mark Kistler.

Every person can be an artist and learn to draw; their eyes and hands just need to be trained. Learning to draw will enhance all other subjects because projects often need artwork. Being able to draw will also boost a child's self confidence and enjoyment.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having home schooled my children from Kindergarten through high school culminating in my son being accepted into UCLA's School of Engineering as a Freshman with a Computer Science major, I feel qualified to teach Elementary Subjects (K-6th).

I taught my children reading, phonics, spelling, math, science, and history. We used hands-on manipulatives, games, and field trips to supplement our math, science, and history textbooks and classroom work. In addition, we read classic literature to coincide with the period of history we were studying.

I was able to tailor my teaching to my children's learning styles to help them in their areas of weakness and expand their areas of strength. I encouraged and directed my children to explore their own areas of interest and also to use their gifts to serve others. I taught them effective ways to use their time and how to set up their environment to be most conducive to learning.

I have been tutoring elementary students daily for the past two years in the areas of Drawing, Math, Science, Grammar, Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, Phonics, and Study Skills.

I look forward to helping your student.

Elementary Math

Going beyond drill and focusing on understanding concepts, I approach math in fun and engaging methods. I use games to build comprehension and speed. I work with each student individually to help them understand in the way that fits their style of learning best.

General Computer

I taught basic computer usage, from how to use the mouse (click and drag) to the keyboard and typing. How to search, create, open and save files, search the web, and create bookmarks was also covered.

Also I demonstrated all the different applications, how to send and receive email, and how to print. Using a computer is considered a necessity these days for word processing, searching for information, and communicating with others. It is vital to have a solid, basic understanding of how to use the computer.

Phonics

I taught my son to read by using the phonics rules and introducing him to the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. Then I showed him how to blend the sounds of a consonant, vowel, and consonant together to say a word. We slowly progressed through the word families (i.e., -at, -it) to practice and build his confidence and vocabulary. At the same time we covered the sight words, gradually moving from beginning to intermediate to challenging sight words. We also read simple books so that my son could see that letters are part of words and that words are part of sentences. I used flashcards to introduce all the sounds and variations of sounds (i.e. soft g and hard g) of the vowels, consonants, and consonant combinations. Silent writing and writing by dictation also supported phonics learning by having my son connect the sound of the letter with its written form.

For over two years I have been teaching phonics to students who are struggling readers and helping them to read more smoothly. I reviewed the vowels and consonant sounds and consonant combinations so that the students could decode words more easily. The students practiced breaking words into syllables and sounding out the letter sounds to decode unknown or nonsense words.

Study Skills

Environment affects learning. I taught my children to have a neat study area with all their "tools" ready (pencil, eraser, ruler, etc.). The lighting was not to bright or dark and the table was placed away from distractions. My children would review their homework assignments and log them into a daily planner so that they could keep organized and take responsibility for their work. It was up to them to complete their assignments and let me know so that I could check them. I showed them how to use a calendar to record due dates and plan incremental steps toward completing projects and reports.

For over two years I have been teaching elementary students to budget their time wisely and plan their schedules in order to complete their projects and book reports. I gave them suggestions on posture, lighting, and materials to enhance their study skills.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
