I have been teaching Russian all levels and ESL (English as a Second Language) Beginning and Intermediate levels for over 20 years at San Diego County public schools and community colleges. I have been also teaching Russian 120 (Basic Russian), Russian 250/251 (Russian Conversation) and Russian 220/221 (Russian Advanced course) at a community college for last 19 years. I also taught Russian Conversation and Russian Phonetics classes at SDSU. I have successfully tutored students individually and in groups for the last five years (different age groups).

I am holding a California Professional Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential, and a California CLAD Credential. In 1997, I graduated from SDSU with MA in Education.

My teaching philosophies are that a teacher is supposed to teach students important study skills and be mostly facilitator in his classroom. Whereas the teacher maintains a close contact with students, he becomes more of a friend and advisor than a mentor to the students, which establishes more trust in their relationship. I believe that full language immersion using various hands on techniques and natural approach strategies will be of great help for foreign language and ESL students. I am constantly open for new methodological teaching models, and recently I went through the SIOP Model workshop teaching ESL curriculum to K-12 students. Being a part of an ethnic community, I could contribute my own multicultural educational experience introducing various languages through culture, history and hands on activities using total physical response and communicative approach

I am also experienced in providing extracurricular activities, like field trips visiting places where they speak target language only, e.g. stores, cultural centers and events.

Yours truly,

Maya K.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
