My name is Lewis. I’m a recent graduate from University of California Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
. Even though I’m enjoying a break while I choose a graduate school program, I haven’t stopped learning. Learning is something I enjoy, which is why I’m interested in teaching. The teacher and learner are both part of a dialogue, enhancing one another’s understanding of a subject.
My first experience with teaching began in my senior year of high school in an ROP Child Psychology class. In addition to studying various approaches to teaching, I was a Teacher Assistant in both 1st and 5th grade
classrooms. My responsibilities included working one-on-one with students having trouble, grading papers, leading class discussions, and teaching units. In college I've worked with others in various ways, including editing
papers and helping review for tests.
My main hobby and one of my biggest strengths is reading
. Books are a consistent source of knowledge and entertainment. Fantasy and philosophy
are my favorite, but I find myself reading a variety of genres and writers. I’m also a fairly quick reader. I once read War and Peace in 5 weeks for a literature
Consequently, I’m a strong writer. Writing
and reading – like teaching and learning – go hand in hand and act
as a sort of feedback loop, one skill supporting the other. I have an extensive vocabulary
but, more importantly, I know how to understand others and be understood.
I’m very organized as well. Before I transferred to University of California Santa Cruz, I was a community college student. A majority of that time was spent at Santa Rosa Junior College, but one particular semester I attended four separate community colleges in order to meet the transfer requirements for Santa Cruz on time. One in Oakland, one in San Ramon, one in Alameda, and one in Martinez. It was a hectic time to say the least. I only managed to achieve a 3.0 because I developed a crucial ability that applies to any field: organization
I look forward to meeting and sharing some of my knowledge with you!
