American History

From Leif Ericson to President Obama's second term, I can guide you through the history of this country of ours. Who else was out riding and warning the countryside, besides Paul Revere? What was Thomas Edison's Black Mariah? What really happened in the Watergate affair that caused a president to resign? I have answers to these and much more when you take American history with me.

Elementary Math

I don't claim any skills with pre-calculus or trigonometry, but I taught a class of basic math to high school students and so I can aid your elementary school student with the knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, fractions and even some elementary algebra. (I'm also quite good at word problems). Let me help your student do better at math and not find it a daunting task anymore.

English

I taught English in a high school (all grades and all levels) for over 16 years. I can guide anyone (from a kindergartener trying to learn his alphabet) to a college senior who just can't seem to get an A on those papers no matter how hard he or she works). I also have skill in helping you make your college personal statement as strong as possible. Whether you are struggling with it or just need a fresh eye to look it over and make suggestions, that would be me. All aspect of written English and literature are all strengths of mine. I hope I get to share that with you.

Film

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Cinema from Denison University. In my lessons we would look at the history of film, starting with Edison's black mariah to this years academy award winners. Some of the subjects would include how race and religion have been depicted in the movies over the years, as well as an examination of special effects and how they came to change the movies. We will look at all types of genres from the musical to the horror film and everything in between. We will discuss movies that we have just watched for their content, direction, period and why (or why not) it is considered a good piece of film.

Literature

I have taught almost every high school core work out there. I have a love of literature and know about the symbolism in Lord of the Flies, the allegory and politics of animal farm, the truth as seen by another in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and much much more. If you're struggling with a novel/short story/nonfiction piece, I'm here to help you from elementary to college level. This was a big part of what I taught for 16 years and I'd like to share my knowledge with you.

Phonics

When I taught in middle school, I was part of a special program for students who were having problems reading. The program was based on phonics, making clear the different sounds you can create through letters and letter combinations. I feel this is a much stronger way to help a student with reading and writing than the whole word approach.

Public Speaking

A recent survey found that most people's #2 fear was death, #1 was public speaking. Having taught speech, debate and oral interpretation in high school and taking teams to speech competitions I have ample experience. So I will help put you more at ease in front of a large group. I can also help you put together a speech (including how to do one off the cuff). We can also look at the different forms of debate and how to use them to win your next argument.

Reading

I was involved in a middle school reading project for students struggling with their basic reading skills. Based on phonics, reading aloud together and some basic one on one skill lessons there was some significant improvement. I can share this with your student as well.

SAT Reading

I'm able to help you analyze and pick out the important things in a piece of reading, as well as a few test taking strategies. I taught high school English at all levels over a 16 year career. I am eager to share that knowledge with you. I also have some materials geared directly towards the SATs.

Study Skills

Having 16 years' experience teaching high school and having two children of my own, I know just how unorganized a student can be. I also understand that sometimes the amount of work just seems insurmountable. I can help you get organized, prioritize your homework and on-going assignments. This is a chance for you to discover the best study style for you, how you get the most work done in the least amount of time and what you can do to make sure that as you go to school each day you are better prepared and able to do better over all.

Theatre

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Cinema from Denison University and was a co-founder of the FEPO Theatre Company, which brings live theatre into the elementary schools. With these lesson we will examine theatre terminology, and there will be a chance to learn the history of theatre starting with Thespis stepping out of the Greek chorus all the way up to this year's Tony Awards. Get a full knowledge of theatre craft and/or help with choosing and performing audition pieces. I can also help you create your character once you have the part. I have done theatre for many years; now is my chance to share my experience with you.

Vocabulary

I would like to mete out (share/distribute) my extensive (large) erudition of discourse (knowledge of words) with you. As a published playwright I have discovered the efficacy (power) of words and the need for a robust (strong) vocabulary. I don't claim knowledge of aesculapian (medical) or canonical (legal) terminology. But if you need help preparing for SATs or simply aid with the vocabulary found in literature and elsewhere, well, I'm your guy.

Writing

I am a published playwright. Writing is what I do for a living. I know how to take someone else's piece and help them polish it (while keeping it in your words, your tone) I can review your essay in every subject and discover ways to make it stronger. I can be a great help with college personal essays as well. Writing is my livelihood. Let me help you become more accomplished in it as well.

If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
