My expertise is comprised of 25 years of combined teaching venues. I have successfully home schooled my own children, and have been asked to home school other children as well. In the course of this experience, I had both ample practice in making up my own curriculum as well as following a given curriculum provided to me by the parents or schools. Furthermore, I have tutored students as little as 3rd Graders, and as old as adults studying for their GEDs. During a four year period, when I thought cooking and home economics at a private school, I have also acquired the knowledge how to teach larger groups of students.
I believe that every student has the ability to learn anything, as long as it is taught to that student in a way that is tailored to his or her way of learning. Every student has an individual perception of taking in the material taught, and it is about getting to know that level of perception in order to proceed with a successful teaching method. My experience in home schooling and other teaching has taught me to focus in on an individual approach for each student within the first few sessions together. This allows me to apply effectively a study method specific to that particular student, and do so in a timely manner. Subsequently, this individual approach follows a map that consists of instruction, practice, and application of the instruction by the student. Most importantly, though, frequent repetition until the material is mastered, is the key that is sure to solidify the knowledge and fill in any gaps in the material the student has been struggling with.
Through the years of experience in tutoring and teaching, I have created an extensive collection of work and practice sheets, for both English and Math. Those I have successfully used with many tutoring students at the grade school level. From my experience, at that age most students benefit greatly from having the problem areas simplified, then following it up with intense practice, and further maintaining the newly acquired knowledge with constant repetition. This method has proven very effective for most of my students, taking the challenge out of the topic(s) they would struggle with.
