I have taught 10 years in the elementary classroom. I have taught all the grades both in elementary and in homeschool and would be happy to help with any elementary subject.
Learning the art of English-writing beautifully and speaking articulately- is a much needed skill in today's world of rapid, haphazard communication. To succeed in high school, college, and in a career, a command of the English language is an important skill. I have taught English at every grade level. I have written editorials, articles for publication, children's stories, short theatrical pieces, and poetry. I have taught English grammar, creative writing, short story, and essay writing. If you need help learning the mechanics of English, or organizing and expressing your thoughts in speaking or writing, I would love to help you.
I have been a student of foreign languages as well as of English, therefore, I understand the great challenge it is to learn English as a second language. In a relaxed and encouraging environment, I would love to help you improve your skills. I can work with you if you are a brand new learner, or an advanced learner. Through a variety of auditory, visual and kinesthetic exercises, I can teach you to improve your vocabulary; to become more comfortable with the rhythm of English phrasing; to become familiar with common expressions, as well as words and phrases you might need for specific situations; and to understand and apply English rules of grammar which will help you communicate in many situations.
Being able to use the English language well is the mark of a good writer. Knowledge of grammar and syntax is essential. I enjoy teaching grammar, and helping others understand the mechanics of the language, as well as helping them see how to improve their writing with the use of good English.
Any written assignment requires a lot of detailed scrutiny to be sure it is polished and ready to submit for a class, a publisher, or for other situations. I have edited a book and written and edited for several publications. I would enjoy helping you bring clarity and coherence and color to your written work.
Many people are fearful of speaking in front of others. Getting help, instruction, and direction for a presentation can greatly improve confidence. I have coached several students to high levels of success in national competitions and would love to help you make a dynamic and memorable presentation the next time you are called on to speak!
Writing the SAT essay could be compared to sprint running. You only have 25 minutes to know what you want to say, organize your thoughts and have them make sense on paper. I can help you train for this event. We can discuss previously scored sample essays, use several tips and techniques for getting you to write quickly, and review and discuss your essays for improvement. Let me know if I can help you!
Since the English language has developed from a number of different sources including Anglo-Saxon, Dutch, German, Greek, and Latin, spelling in English can be tricky! I would love to help your student improve in being able to spell correctly.
What is the assignment? What is the overview? Where can you find the information you need for a lesson, or a report? How do you identify the most important themes or topics in a chapter that you have to know for a test? What are some ways to help you memorize? Do you know how to use resources such as index, glossary, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia? Knowing how to study makes learning more fun and exciting. It helps you understand your subject more clearly and remember facts better. It also enables you to have a much better grasp of the material in your lessons, on your tests, or when the teacher asks you a question that you have to answer out loud! I would love to help you hone your study skills so that you can shine in class!
