Hi!

I began my undergraduate education as an electrical engineering student where I founded a robotics organization known as the Engineering Design Team. I then transferred to physics to learn the fundamentals of engineering and did a brief internship with a subcontractor for The Department of Defense. It was at this point I decided to apply my love for science to promoting health and wellness, so I switched to the biological sciences, completed a major in Movement Science, and did additional study in Neuroscience. I received a graduate degree in Bio-Medical Sciences and co-authored two papers on muscle physiology prior to beginning medical school. I left medical school early but continue to develop an educational initiative which focuses on bringing obesity prevention counseling into medical practice.

Although I have been in multiple majors, the one thing that remained constant was my desire to teach. I was a tutor both on a volunteer and paid basis all throughout my college career in an assorted variety of science and math based subjects. During my graduate study I taught a course in aerobics and conditioning and also privately tutored MCAT preparation. I also gave a lecture to incoming medical and podiatry students on efficient study techniques at my former medical school.

The one thing I learned in all of my experience is that no job, no career, no dream, is outside of the reach of persistence and dedication. My approach to tutoring is to guide the student to develop their own system of learning. I lecture students with the intention of empowering them to become their own tutors and to evolve past the need for my services. I guide students to become more proficient at the process of learning itself. The skills I hope to impart will advance the student's ability to learn in all realms, beyond the subject matter we cover. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching a student become a master of their own learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I break down the ACT math section into the major classes of fundamental problems that will be presented. From each fundamental problem, we will work from the base easiest example and then increase in complexity. I also help a student establish a sense of time management when taking a standardized test.

I teach all subjects with the same fundamental process. I evaluate a student's baseline ability and identify the types of thinking skills that can be developed. I then design specific homework assignments and "brain exercises" to not only improve their grades, and their performance in future classes, but improve their ability to think. My goal is to impart skills, not just information.

ACT Science

I break down the ACT Science section into the major classes of fundamental problems that will be presented. From each fundamental problem, we will work from the base easiest example and then increase in complexity. I also help a student establish a sense of time management when taking a standardized test. I also guide the student to understand how to read the passages. As opposed to concentrating on things to remember, I help them shift their perspective when reading.

Algebra 1

I break down Algebra 1 into the major classes of fundamental problems that will be presented. From each fundamental problem, we will work from the base easiest example and then increase in complexity. I also help the student to establish a general organizational scheme for solving math problems. This ability will extend far beyond the subject we are covering.

Anatomy

Anatomy is a subject I truly enjoy and I have taken it at the undergraduate level and in medical school as well.

Biochemistry

I have a thorough background in biochemistry, since I took it as an undergraduate student and again in medical school.

Some of the concepts in biochemistry are more procedural based and require an understanding of enzyme kinetics, reading graphs, and application of these principles. I help the student to understand these base principles by presenting them with sequentially harder problems to elevate their reasoning ability.

The rest of Biochemistry is a memory based class that is based on the student’s ability to recall facts. As opposed to simply teaching the facts, I help the student to develop their own faculties of studying, learning, forming mnemonics, time management, and creating a repetition schedule. This ensures that the student is studying more efficiently and can remember more for a longer period of time.

Biology

As a former medical student and researcher, I have accumulated many years of study in biology.

Biology is a memory based class that is based on the student’s ability to recall facts. As opposed to simply teaching the facts, I help the student to develop their own faculties of studying, learning, forming mnemonics, time management, and creating a repetition schedule. Bodybuilding

I received my certificate in personal training from the National Academy of Sports Medicine in 2004, was formerly employed as a personal trainer by X-Sport fitness in Chicago in 2004-2005. I have an undergraduate degree in movement science (kinesiology) from the University of Illinois at Chicago and am currently employed as a Master level trainer at Club One in Petaluma California. I also instructed aerobics and conditioning when I was a graduate student in kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Chemistry

I have a thorough background in Chemistry, since I took it as an undergraduate student and advanced levels of it in medical school.

Chemistry is a conceptual based course that requires the student to understand and be able to work through a variety of different problems.

Chess

I have been playing chess on and off for about 10 years. Although I do not have a formal FIDE rating I play on Chess.com with other competitive players. I am familiar with basic openings and defenses and how the game unfolds into the three stages of beginning, middle, and endgame. I also occasionally play with a a person who was a few points shy of 2,200, which means he is just shy of being a chess master. I really enjoy the game and am very qualified to teach a basic to intermediate level well.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math can be broken down into two main categories; memorization of the facts or rules (multiplication table, addition, etc.) and the application of these principles. Mastery of the subject entails developing the ability to memorize and the conceptual facets of the mind.

I teach all subjects with the same fundamental process. I evaluate a student's baseline ability and identify the types of thinking skills that can be developed. I then design specific homework assignments and "brain exercises" to not only improve their grades, and their performance in future classes, but improve their ability to think. Fitness

Martial Arts

I am currently studying both muay thai and jiu jitsu with NorCal Fighting Alliance in Santa Rosa. I also did approximately one year of study with POW fitness in Chicago of no gi jiu jitsu and kickboxing. As a Master Trainer at Club One, I also teach these practices to my clients. My background in Yoga also assists my ability to control my body. I plan to teach both a beginners level Yoga class and an "MMA Fit" Kickboxing class at Club One in Petaluma California, early next year.

MCAT

I have taken the MCAT and am a former medical student at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. I have experience tutoring the MCAT and can help a person design a "structure" for approaching the MCAT. It begins with using good review materials, which can change depending on your level of understanding.

I tutor the MCAT by getting a student set up with review materials and have them go through it on their own time and help them cultivate self-discipline. As the student accumulates questions or gets stuck on concepts, the student submit me a list of questions and topics they would like clarification on. I then design a lecture on this material and guide you through your sticking points. This keeps it efficient, I am only tutoring you what you need to know and not wasting your time teaching you things you already know. The MCAT takes a LOT of work. I have personally elevated my score by 7 points and anyone else can do the same or more! But it takes WORK.

Microbiology

I have taken microbiology as an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I also took microbiology again as a medical student.

Microbiology can be broken down into the basics of understanding the general means of classifying organisms. When students can identify the distinct characteristics of each organism, they will be able to quickly determine what a problem is looking for. Some microbiology courses also cover the experimental tools used in microbiology such as genotyping, western blotting, polymerase chain reaction, etc. I help the students to efficiently develop a system to categorize, memorize, and repeat the information.

Nutrition

I have a graduate certificate in Nutrition from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and also give nutritional counseling as part of my Master Trainer position at Club One in Petaluma California. I have also taken a course in nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago and am a former medical student at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken organic chemistry 1, organic chemistry 2, and organic chemistry lab, did very well in all courses and reviewed some of the concepts from organic chemistry as a former medical student. I have also tutored organic chemistry to undergraduate students and tutored organic chemistry to students studying for the MCAT.

Organic chemistry can be broken down into mastering the nomenclature, mastering the general reactions, and applying these reactions to problems. I teach the student to understand the fundamentals of organic chemistry and establish a good system of memorization to make their studying more efficient.

Philosophy

I consider philosophy to be one of the few subjects outside of the realm of science that is more so concerned with conceptual understanding than wrote memorization. Guiding a student to understand philosophical concepts entails presenting questions and challenges that help a student expand their consciousness that is just beyond their current level of understanding.

For the memorization based component of this course, I help a student develop their own system of mnemonics and memorization scheduling so that they can retain information efficiently.

Physical Science

Physical science is both a conceptual and memory based course. The conceptual portion requires the student to understand and be able to work through a variety of different problems. The memorization portion is taught by helping the student to establish their own system of organizing and classifying the information in a way that works for them.

Physics

Physics is a conceptual based course that requires the student to understand and be able to work through a variety of different problems. Establishing an ability to draw a good free body diagram, organize the givens, and identify the problem, is very important. I also work with the student to help them understand how to apply the fundamental equations of physics for each problem and be able to select the appropriate equation for the problem.

I teach all subjects with the same fundamental process. I evaluate a student's baseline ability and identify the types of thinking skills that can be developed. I then design specific homework assignments and "brain exercises" to not only improve their grades, and their performance in future classes, but improve their ability to think. Study Skills

I have studied under multiple majors (electrical engineering, physics, kinesiology) prior to attending medical school. With each major I learned about different processes of learning and education and gained and overall understanding of how to efficiently study. I also gave a lecture on efficient study techniques to incoming medical and podiatry students at my former medical school. Studying can be broken down into a process and a science that has some commonalities, but must be uniquely tailored and adopted to an individual’s learning style. I enjoy guiding students to discover and gain efficiency in their own learning style.

TEAS

I am thoroughly familiar with the subject matter on this exam since I am a former medical student and have tutored students to prepare them for the MCAT. I also have experience individually tutoring most of the math and science subjects relevant to this exam and I also teach standardized test taking strategies.

Trigonometry

I break down Trigonometry into the major classes of fundamental problems that will be presented. From each fundamental problem, we will work from the base easiest example and then increase in complexity. I also help the student to establish a general organizational scheme for solving math problems. This ability will extend far beyond the subject we are covering.

Yoga

I have studied both Kundalini and a form of Vinyasa flow yoga and practice yoga six days a week and meditation seven days a week. I also privately instruct yoga in my job as a master trainer at Club One, where I help an individual remove excess joint guarding with targeted yoga and I also design specific sun salutations for my clients based on their specific needs. I may be teaching my own yoga class at Club One beginning early next year.
