I am 24 years old and am Portuguese/Brazilian. I speak English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. I love networking with people and having professional conversations. I received the IB Diploma at Tracy High School. In high school, I studied endless literature. I've written many commentaries, papers, and analyses comparing literary devices across novels, poems, and writing styles. At the University I study international politics and Russian area studies. I'm currently writing about the changing positions of the US, Russia, and China in the international political structure. However, my academic interests include Economics and Business. I try to read the Wall Street Journal every day, to constantly draw and add to my knowledge of the world.
I realize first that a subject can only be taught to the extent possible, and that methods must adapt to the leaning style most effective for the student. However, to achieve fluency the learning style must include two aspects:
- Conversation is useful to increase fluency and cultural understanding (depth of knowledge)
- Reading and writing is necessary to expand vocabulary (breadth of knowledge).
The following tools become key:
- Conversation and practice outside of the classroom is necessary for successful retention and fluidity of speech.
- Children's literature is effective in the extent that it is appropriate.
- Repetition of grammar exercises is indispensable in languages where conjugation or declensions are used.
- Personal writing responses are necessary to reflect what we need or want to say.
- Slang or informal speech is also important because even business professionals use it.
- Song, food, dance, jokes, etc are useful to achieve higher levels of accomplishment.
I have only taken one class on cooking before, which was Russian cuisine. However, I have learned how to make a number of dishes from various cuisine. This includes American, Russian, Brazilian/Portuguese, and Chinese/Sichuan. Russian dishes include broiled chicken and potatoes, Borsch, "Vinagrette", Beef Stroganof, and "pancakes". Brasilian dishes include black beans, Farofa, Bacalhau, rotisserie roast, and a drink called Caipirinha. Sichuan dishes include rice porridge, Shui Zhu Yu fish soup, Mapo Tofu, Double Cooked Pork, "Mouthwatering Chicken", and Garlic Pork cold dish (Suan Ni Pai Rou). Other mouthwatering Asian dishes include the Philipine Chicken Adobo or the Vietnamese sandwich Banh Mi. I've learned these dishes from native Russians, from native Sichuan people, and from native Brazilian people. In addition to concrete dishes however, there are also tendencies that can be taken from each cuisine that adds a spice, twist, or an extra level of richness to whatever might come to mind. For example the use of sour cream, mayonnaise, and dill in Russian cuisine; the use of linguica, olive oil, and chili sauce in Portuguese cuisine; and finally the use of peppercorns, star anise, and various sauces in Sichuan cuisine. While I have only discussed first and second course dishes, I also know how to prepare a number of desserts. I can instruct preparation of dishes ranging in difficulty. My methods including frying pan, pot, pressure cooking, and in the oven.
I've read through a marketing research book handed to me by a professor on my own time, I've tutored Marketing students in understanding and completing their online homework. I began a marketing firm with friends involving student lunch specials, and I've taught at a summer entrepreneurial camp including facilitating understanding and application of marketing/market research and leading a lesson on Marketing. The lesson focused on the 4 W's, an adaption of the 4 P's, but considering the competing products; Who, Where, What and Why? Most of my marketing understanding and application comes from cross cultural training and anthropology classes, where the goal is to understand the person or people and to learn how to identify with them.
I am a Russian Area Studies major at the University of the Pacific. I have completed 4 semesters of Russian language, and taken a Russian film course in the United States of America. I have studied abroad in St Petersburg, Russia for the semester of Spring 2011. While abroad, I took classes abroad in Grammar, Conversation, Ethnic Studies, History, and Art. I also lived with a host family which spoke no English. In addition to my studies, I volunteered to instruct Russian students English as a native language. I was a member of a choir while abroad, where we sang Russian traditional and folk music. I made a number of Russian friends while abroad, with whom I met a number of times each week. My Russian abilities have been described as having a non-foreign accent, excellent command, and fluidity of the language. While abroad I would have long conversations in Russian with the Russian Program Coordinators, my host family, street vendors, or native friends I had made.
