Hello. My name is Michael and I am a Science-aholic.

After years of working as an Organic Chemist and Researcher at the University of Southern California, I recently relocated to Santa Monica to become the Science Content Developer at an education/tech company in the area. I only work out of Santa Monica and like to work out of public places or at my students' homes.

As a tutor in the past, I have worked with students across all topic areas in the Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, etc.) and all age groups (K-12 and College Students). Through years of experience, I have found that my true areas of expertise - the classes where my students achieve their goals - are as follows:

Chemistry: High School, AP, All College-Level (including GEs, Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry)
Physics: High School, AP, Introductory College-Level
Biology: High School, AP, All College-Level (GEs, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, etc.)
Organic Chemistry
MCAT Physical and Biological Science Sections

My tutoring style is very calm and understanding. I am very goal-oriented and I expect my students (and their parents) to have clearly-defined goals for our work together. I oftentimes use (and sometimes even custom create) digital tools to help my students learn and practice between our sessions - not only is this a great way to build up their skills and confidence, but it also keeps the students accountable to their goals. I expect a lot out of my students, but that is only because I truly believe they are capable of anything.

If you are looking for a science expert (someone who has taught science, performed scientific research, and completed a BS in Biochemistry with Honors), then I am the tutor you are looking for. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Golf

I have been an avid golfer for my entire life; I was the first-ranked player on my High School varsity team at perennial golf power Huntington Beach High and currently sport a 4.1 handicap. I took lessons from Victor P. for over 5 years, who also taught former #1-ranked professional LPGA golfer Laurena Ochoa. I have studied the swings of both professionals and amateurs whilst developing my own game and have a great understanding of my local golf landscape including tournaments, associations, and courses.

Guitar

I cofounded a non-profit organization called Play On, Inc. where I taught guitar lessons to underprivelaged youth in Los Angeles. I have attended multiple music education conventions and worked directly with professors at the USC Thornton School of Music to develop a lesson plan that works for beginners and for more advanced guitar players. I have guitar playing samples of my own work available at all time and I have a lot of great software I can use to enhance my guitar lessons. I have been teaching guitar lessons for 7 years.

MCAT

I took the MCAT in 2014 and scored in the 96th percentile on the test overall (and in the 99th percentile on the physical sciences section). I am familiar with most of the study materials provided by Kaplan, Princeton Review, and ExamKrackers and I can help you build a solid study program from the ground up without having to spend thousands on a full MCAT course. I work in education, so I am keeping current with the 2015 content changes to the MCAT exam for work as well as my tutoring jobs.

Organic Chemistry

I have a B.S. in Biochemistry and have 3 years of experience doing Organic Chemistry research at USC. I received high marks in my organic chemistry classes and I have tutored many students in organic chemistry. Finally, I have a great understanding of what is covered in both organic chemistry classes and what is covered on the MCAT.

Great math Tutor! — Great geometry tutor for me! Math is not my favorite subject and I wasn't so happy about a math tutor coming on Sunday night! But he was cool. When we opened the door and Micheal was a college type guy and I did know he was an expert at geometry: math but also the guitar! I could tell he knew his stuff right away and was really good at explaining to me the whys not just how to do the problems, and ...
