Although I’m new to WyzAnt, I have years of tutoring and classroom teaching experience with children, teens and adults. I’m a widely published writer who has won many awards for poetry and is currently publishing in respected literary journals. I’ve published novels and hundreds of magazine articles, and I’ve taught English, history, and math in a variety of classrooms to many kinds of learners.

I’d love to help you or your child with elementary math - I specialize in bringing below-grade level learners up to speed - writing mechanics, or reading. For older kids, I offer creative writing, essay writing, critical reading, nearly all humanities, including history and psychology, and - perhaps most important of all - study skills and organization.

I can help you with one tough assignment or work with you regularly to improve your skills. I’m friendly, kind and patient - but don’t be fooled; when we study together, you (or your child) will work hard and learn a lot.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a classroom teacher at top CAIS local schools, I have a great deal of experience working with kids with ADD and ADHD, and am familiar with the learning strategies recommended by top educational therapists.

American History

I’m an American history and ancient history buff! I’d love to help you study for an exam or enrich your knowledge of our country’s heritage. Whether you are studying history as a fifth grader, eighth grader, high schooler or college student, I can help you memorize and analyze facts, people, and events.

Aspergers

I have had great experiences with students with Asperger's and other spectrum disorders as a classroom teacher. With help from parents, educational therapists and other professionals, a strong and patient tutor can guide a person with Asperger's Syndrome to terrific success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a multiple subject classroom teacher for grades 4, 5, and 6 at top local private schools, and an English and history teacher for grades 5 - 8. I have over ten years' classroom teaching experience.

Elementary Math

I’ve taught elementary math to all kinds of learners - those who love math, and those who claimed not to... and I haven’t lost a student yet! Math struggles nearly always stem from the student having missed an important building block to higher learning - whether that’s number sense in the P-K to second grade years, simple operations in first through fourth grade, fractions, percentages and long division in upper elementary... or failure at any age to master the dreaded times tables. I can help! Whatever the trouble, we’ll get right to the heart of it and have fun at the same time. Hey, mom and dad - need some help figuring a fifteen percent tip or a seventeen percent discount? I can help with that, too!

Elementary Science

Science should be, and can be, fun! Kids are natural scientists, wanting to touch, taste and feel everything around them from babyhood. They are natural experimenters! Later, they are fascinated by animals, plants, rocks, everything in the natural world. But a dry text or uninspired teacher can kill a child's natural fascination with science. Let's work together to get your child reconnected to this very important, life-enhancing subject!

English

I am a widely published writer with hundreds of magazine publishing credits, several pseudonymous novels, and many published poems. I’ve won awards for writing and have led many writing workshops. I also edit manuscripts for authors and teach English grammar skills to corporate clients (businesses).

Public Speaking

I am a trained actor who worked professionally for several years. Since then, I’ve honed my public speaking skills by heading assembly programs and by leading corporate workshops. I’m comfortable speaking to groups large or small, and I can help children and adults polish presentations and feel more confident speaking before a group.

SAT Writing

Hi! Need a little help with SAT writing from a professional? In addition to having aced my own SATs, GREs, and GMATs, I've been a novelist, journalist and poet for more than twenty years. Study guides are great - they really are very helpful - but their value is increased many times by the support of a knowledgeable, patient tutor. Let me help!

Social Studies

I have taught social studies in the classrooms of top CAIS and non-secular private schools, including geography at all grade levels, and history at the fourth (California), fifth (American), sixth (ancient), and eight (American) grade levels. I also have a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Study Skills

I’m a widely published writer who has won many awards for poetry and is currently publishing in respected literary journals. Many people who struggle with note-taking and have trouble reading their notes or learning from them later believe they lack note-taking skills, but often that is not the problem! Did you know many people absorb oral and written information better when they don’t take notes? Often, children and adults who struggle with “study skills” can benefit from a few simple hints regarding organization. I can help your child learn better, faster, and with greater enjoyment...and so can you, with a little help in discerning what expectations are appropriate at various ages an grade levels. Let my years of classroom experience and training in reaching various types of learners benefit you and your child.

Writing

I was a novelist and a journalist writing for top national magazines before I became a classroom teacher. Since then, I've focused on poetry, and have been awarded many prizes and commendations for my work. I'm also a grammarian with experience making presentations about written and spoken English to corporate clients. Many years of classroom teaching have shown me that everyone's writing skills can be improved - from the third grader struggling with spelling and grammar to the adult writing his or her doctoral thesis. I've guided many a reluctant writer to a love of - or at least a tolerance for - writing poetry, stories, essays and school reports. Let's talk!
