As a 4 year old I was mysteriously attracted to the piano as if it was just sitting there waiting for me to come to it and interact. So, I did. Much to my surprise I found that I was able to play simple melodies and even invent my own. For some reason it all sort of made sense. After a few years of doodling I was sent off to have piano lessons. From then on I studied the piano, began the guitar at age 15, and started learning music theory. I decided to be a professional musician at age 19 when I began my career playing and singing for a living on the streets of Paris, France.
Upon my return to the U.S. I lived and studied at the New York Conservatory of Music, also with a well known jazz guitarist named Les Spann. I later studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and privately with another brilliant musician and composer named William A Mathieu. Then, I returned to Europe where I lived, played, toured, and recorded for 23 years based in Paris, London and Amsterdam. I speak French and can teach in the French language. I've made 8 albums. 4 of those albums were acoustic and electric guitar. The other 4 were mainly piano, synthesizer and guitar. During this whole period of time I have always taught guitar combined with music theory to help explain how the guitar works so my students can learn more quickly with a better understanding of what I am trying to teach them. I want them to know and understand what they're doing.
My method of teaching is not dogmatic and I don't use any books. I teach my students how to use their ears, how chords, scales, and rhythms are constructed and how they inter-relate with each other, what intervals are, how to recognize them, how they are used in chord construction, and how it all works seamlessly together. I teach them what they want to learn and many things they don't yet know that they need to learn so they can advance at as fast a pace as they are capable of.
I teach each student differently according to his or her level, ability, and interests. I try to make the learning experience as fun and interesting as possible. My main goal is to eventually get students to learn how to improvise, using the knowledge I've passed on to them, and acquire the freedom to play whatever they want. I teach Folk, Blues, Rock, Jazz and theory, and just basically how to play whatever appeals to them. I don't teach classical guitar. I use tablature and chord charts to write out anything that needs to be read and retained, memorized, or used for further reference.
