Some of my most rewarding moments as an instructor have been helping students realize that switching their cameras to manual mode is not as scary as it seems, and that the "magic" of Photoshop can be learned.
I fell in love with photography at age 18 and was already self-taught when I took my first photography class in college. I graduated with a degree in art history and a minor in visual arts from West Virginia University. My study of visual art has aided my transition to full-time retoucher tremendously, as the understanding of the human form, the way light falls on a subject, and color theory are essential when transforming an image in Photoshop.
My students have ranged from 8-year-olds eager to learn how to swap heads in Photoshop to adult photographers seeking a more streamlined editing process. I have taught Photoshop, Lightroom, DSLR photography, studio lighting, and point-and-shoot photography. After accessing your skill level, be it beginner, intermediate, or advanced, we will discuss your goals and I will create a customized syllabus of lessons that we will continue at your own pace.
Adobe Lightroom has been an essential tool in my workflow ever since I shot my first wedding in 2007. This program is useful for anyone who needs to edit a large amount of files at once, and its usefulness extends far beyond simple exposure and color correction. I have given private lessons in Lightroom, and I feel this one-on-one, hands-on method of teaching is best for this program because it is designed with a photographer's workflow in mind. Thus, we will first go over your specific workflow to identify which areas of Lightroom to pay extra special close attention to.
Most people are intimidated by Adobe Photoshop, but what I find most exciting about it is that you could become a complete expert and there are still things to learn and different surprises! My journey with Photoshop began in 2007, when I quickly learned that I was as excited to edit my photos as I was to shoot them. I taught digital photography and Photoshop at a performing arts high school, and even though most of my students were not photographers, they benefitted from being able to put Adobe Photoshop as a skill on their resumes when they graduated. I also had the pleasure of teaching 8-12 year olds Photoshop at a summer camp. I love this program so much because there is something fun to learn for every age group! I have also done private tutoring for adults. I find private tutoring the best way to teach Photoshop, because it gives the student the opportunity to ask as many questions as possible. Currently, I work as a retoucher, retouching portraits and designing albums.
Though I am self-taught as a photographer, I took a beginner darkroom photography course in college which reinforced my knowledge of the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.) I have working experience with DSLR photography. I was a staff photographer for a newspaper for two years, have shot over fifteen weddings, assisted fashion photographers using studio lighting systems. I have also taught digital photography at the high school level, taught at a summer camp for 8-12 year olds, and have done private tutoring for adults. I prefer to take a hands-on approach when teaching exposure, white balance, and external lighting, and tailoring the lessons to the student's camera.
A very helpful session! — Nikki responded to me almost within minutes of my request, and she was able to meet with me the very next day. I had a very specific agenda of what I wanted to accomplish and I had a tight timeline to accomplish it within. Nikki was able to help me on my very outdated software. She showed me several ways to do the things I needed to do, and helped me with shortcuts. She made sure I got the really ...
