*December 2013 Update: I am currently only accepting new students who can come to me, or are willing to be tutored via Skype or Google Hangout.*
**September 2014 Update: While I would love to work with students who need just a little help and/or guidance on one-time projects or college essays, my only open slots for students looking for regular, weekly sessions are Tuesdays, between 4:30pm-7pm, Fridays from 3-6pm, or students on alternative schedules who are able to meet on weekday mornings**
I am a career student who has a love for both learning and teaching. I have four degrees: a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT, a M.Ed. from Tufts, a MFA in Writing from Bennington, and an Ed.D. from USC... I collect degrees because it's fun, invigorating, and I'm perpetually curious about how things work. My husband always jokes that next I should get a degree in law (something I might eventually take him up on!).
I have taught in urban schools in Boston and Omaha as well as the suburban (and kind of famous) Arcadia High School in the LA area. I have won teaching awards, if you care, but more importantly, I love teaching. I loved making chemistry, science, writing, anything I was teaching relevant. I loved doing demos and having crazy analogies about how Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are a great example of a single replacement reaction.
I have students I still keep in touch with who are married, who are in graduate school, who are at all sorts of different stages of their lives.
When I got married and had a child of my own, I transitioned into private industry and worked briefly as the Director of Data and Research at an education technology company. It was more lucrative financially, but less emotionally satisfying.
Now that I have two small children at home, they take up a lot of my time and energy... yet I find that I miss teaching. I still work as a grant writer, evaluator, and researcher on a consulting basis for a variety of education companies. However, I am looking to add some tutoring to my days, and weekends. It will be nice to earn some money, but more importantly, I miss that aspect of my life.
I am looking to build longer term relationships with a few students. I am most comfortable as a Chemistry or English tutor, though I have also taught algebra and physics, done some SAT/ACT/GRE tutoring and have performed extensive college application editing for many of my students and friends (for graduate and undergraduate applications).
*** UPDATE *** I lower my rate for students who are willing to come to me (so that I may tutor them in my home) or meet via Skype. I have students that I'm very happy with right now and am currently only accepting new students who can either a) travel to me or b) meet primarily via Skype.
As a lifelong student who has switched careers multiple times, I feel I am uniquely qualified to advise in a variety of careers and fields. I have worked as a researcher, an engineer, a manager, a teacher and a director of data and research.
As an experienced high school teacher, I have counseled my students on the college application and decision process. I have edited and counseled many of them as they made the transition to graduate school, and have intimate knowledge and experience of the entire process having received degrees from four different institutions (MIT, Tufts, Bennington and USC).
I have experience as a competitive high school speech and debate team member, as an educational leader, and also in a professional capacity. I am able to give public speaking coaching and tips for all age ranges, high school and up.
I have coached and edited many personal statements and essays at high school, undergraduate and graduated levels.
