Learning something new can feel overwhelming. So much to take in, explore and understand. At the core of a good learning experience is having someone willing to walk alongside you as you step into the experience of understanding. Someone able to know when to inspire, when to push and when to offer kindness.

As a tutor and teacher for many years, I have always appreciated the times I had a good teacher. Someone able to have the time and patience to encourage me and see me through the challenges of a subject. I draw from those experiences every time I teach, using the skills I saw in others as inspiration for meaningful learning experiences.

I feel I have a unique skill at being able to connect with others and support them through times of growth and transition. I have done this in several arenas, from stage performance to health care to working with children. My educational experience makes me well versed in the humanities and the arts, as well as religious and spiritual education. I also draw from an extensive background in counseling, which aids my ability to listen deeply to the needs of the student and how best to support them while they learn.

My approach to tutoring is to initially take time to know who I am working with and what their learning style is like. I strive at all times to be creative with the subject matter so that the learning experience can be a dynamic process, not a simple repeating of facts. Learning supports us in engaging with the world in a new way, so it is important that learning is lively. From there I work to build a strong foundation of basics so that the student can build confidence in what they already know and where they need to grow. Small steps so that greater steps can be taken. From here it is possible to learn more deeply and take on greater challenges.

What you will receive from me as a teacher is someone who is compassionate and inspired by being able to be of service to others. You will find someone willing to walk with you as you learn, rather than being an expert who talks down at you. Education has been in my life since I was a little, so I will work to convey my passion for learning and perhaps in the process inspire you as well.

I have a BA in Speech, with a focus on theatre and an MA in Buddhist Studies with a Concentration in Socially Engaged Buddhism. My MA degree trained me in the practice of social action, religious studies, cultural studies as well as world history.

In addition I have taught several subjects (primarily theatre) at the grade school and high school level, as well as several classes in spirituality and culture at the college level. I am a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains and a certified Mindfulness Mediation teacher.

I have written numerous articles, blogs and case studies as part of my work life - so I have a strong understanding of how to tell a story and the use of language. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

A main component of my master's degree training focused on comparative religion studies. So I spent a portion of that program studying the Bible, as well as other essential religious texts.

Then for the next 15 years I worked as a chaplain, working in hospitals and hospice. My work focused on providing spiritual support for those facing major transition. Much of my time I explored the meaning of faith and how scripture could help guide someone through moments of crisis.

So I feel I have a strong understanding of the Bible and can support someone in their study and exploration of their faith.

College Counseling

My qualifications regarding this stem from several different experiences. First I worked in a college admissions office for two years during graduate school. I assisted with a variety of tasks, including reviewing applications and counseling prospective students on various programs at the school.

Second - for roughly 6 years starting in 2002 I reviewed applications for college equivalency requests for the Association of Professional Chaplains. Since it is required a person have a Masters of Divinity to apply to Board Certification, my job was to help those candidates who did not have an MDiv but did potentially have the equivalent training. So I reviewed their essays and other materials and needed to make a recommendation to the review board.

Third - currently I am an equivalency reviewer for Learning Counts. This is a national organization that reviews equivalency requests from people applying to secondary educational programs who are trying to get credit for various experiences and other training. I need to review personal statements and other documents to make a recommendation.

These experiences, plus other experiences applying for educational grants, gives me a solid foundation in how to work with someone planning for college and working on how to present themselves to a college admissions department. Thank you.

Macintosh

For the last 30 years of my life I have worked on a Macintosh computer. My father bought one of the first Macs. It could type and make cool drawings, which was great in high school.

Since then my computer of choice remains a Mac, so I am familiar with how the system works and the features of this brand of computer. I also know the programs that are most effective to use for various projects and how to maximize the use of the particular model you might have.

Microsoft Word

I have been working with these programs for about 20 years, so I have a strong foundation in how to navigate and work with the program. It is more workable than you think, it just takes a little time and practice.

Public Speaking

I have over 20 years of experience in performance and public speaking. My BA is from the School of Speech at Northwestern University, where I studied theatre and performance. I have performed professionally in dozens of productions in Chicago and Boulder, CO. During my twelve years in Chicago I ran three theatre production companies and started a school for the Alternative Theatre Arts. I have directed about 10 productions, as well as produced, stage managed and handled the technical aspects of a production. This diversity gives me a strong understanding not only of the act of speaking to an audience, but also of the environment the speaker must be aware of as they speak.

In my work as a spiritual care provider, I presented over a hundred workshops at the State and National level in the fields of healthcare, hospice, spiritual care and grief, self-care and cultural awareness. I have presented to community groups, professional groups and to office communities. Due to a leadership position I held with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) for 5 years (2006 to 2011) I was continually asked to present sessions, web conference sessions and a variety of other events that placed me in front of the public. I am skilled in the creation and execution of of PowerPoint presentations and how to engage an audience.

During all of this time I have performed or presented to groups as small as 6 and as large as several thousand. I have personally assisted in helping colleagues prepare for a presentation and helped coach them through fears of public speaking. In my theatre work I have supported children and young adults to create theatre and find their voice in performance. I did this with touring shows at Northwestern University, through my school and through various productions. I also directed theatre productions at a summer camp in Maine.

I feel that I have extensive experience and ability in this field and bring a confidence essential in the support of those needing or wanting to step in front of a group of people and be heard.

Religion

I received my MA in Buddhist Studies from Naropa University. This particular program focused on an in-depth religious and spiritual education, with a focus in the the training of chaplaincy. Since 1999 I have worked as a chaplain and spiritual care provider in hospitals, hospice and as a trainer for other chaplains. My training and experience requires me to be versed in an interfaith perspective. This means that I am required to understand a variety of spiritual and religious traditions and be able to support and dialogue with others about those traditions. It requires that I understand rituals and ceremonies, as well as be able to perform them on occasion when the need arises. Due to this interfaith perspective, I have a broad knowledge base to draw from. I am not merely representing one tradition.

I have an expertise in the practice of Spiritual Direction, which means assisting others in the discernment of their faith and beliefs. This requires mentoring someone as they go deeply into their understanding of the world around them and how they connect to higher power. This mentorship requires an element of teaching about the basic structures of different religions and faiths. I also work to support those becoming chaplains and teach on subjects within that field. I have taught for the Chaplaincy Institute and the Sati Center, as well as presented Nationally on a variety of topics connected to spiritual care and religion.

I have taught on the college level topics connected to religion, spirituality and culture and its role in illness and dying. I have also trained chaplains in this setting, which requires teaching on the subject of religion frequently. This is a natural subject for me and I feel I bring an ability to explore the dynamic elements of spirituality to the forefront, as well as the practical.

Speech

I have more than twenty five years of experience in the performing arts and public speaking. My BA in Speech from Northwestern University, as well as training in TESL, provides a strong background for me regarding this subject. My approach is to work with where the person's strengths are and build confidence so that they see that they can accomplish change.

Theatre

As it states elsewhere in my profile, I received a BA in Speech from Northwestern University, one of the most respected theatre and performance schools in the country. While there I ran two student theatre companies, one of which produced 12 separate productions with a total operating budget of around $300,000. I had a focus in directing, solo performance and children's theatre. I was part of a school supported children's touring company and wrote and produced my own one person play. The training at Northwestern was rigorous, with in depth study of acting technique and methods for exploring the development of a character. In four years we studied everything from the Greeks to Neil Simon.

After graduating I remained in Chicago, working with a number of production companies and artists throughout the city. I acted, directed and provided technical support for many productions. I started a third production company with a fellow graduate from Northwestern and created some productions, including an adaptation of a Jean Cocteau novel. The productions varied in size and audience, so I have a diverse experience in how to work with a variety of audiences. I then started the Actor's Gymnasium, an alternative theatre school, with members of the Lookingglass Theatre and others. We taught physical theatre, circus arts and a variety of other styles of performance. We worked with performers from all over the world.

I continue to be engaged in theatre, even though I am living in San Francisco. I acted in productions the 8 years I lived in Boulder Colorado and worked over a two year period with a production called Zen Cabaret. Zen Cabaret blends music, social commentary, commedia and other forms of theatre. I was an actor, as well as part of the writing team.

Video Production

I have been interested in video and sound production for the last several years. I have mostly worked on small projects for non-profits and for my own personal interest. I have a working knowledge of equipment and the basic set-up requirements needed to create a good shoot. I utilize iMovie and Final Cut Express as my main editing software. However, there is a basic methodology to putting a film together regardless of the editing program. It requires planning and forethought, otherwise it will take much longer for the project to get finished.

I also am experienced in sound recording, especially as it pertains to the support of a video project. This is often a component that is overlooked, resulting in a final project that cannot be heard by the audience. I have filmed on location in several states and in Africa, so I understand methods for keeping the shoot simple if need be. I also am a photographer, so often I incorporate images in with the video aspects of a project.

I primarily have been trained through experience, with the addition of some film classes. I have also been an actor in several films, so I have an understanding of that experience as well.

Writing

Writing and creative expression is key as a means of presenting who you are in the world. To be able to give voice to that which stirs you, and therefore the potential to stir others, is a skill you will need your whole life. Whether it is a school essay, job application or the story you have always wanted to write, the ability to get your words on paper in a clear and engaging way will serve you well.

I have worked in a number of different mediums and have been published in several books and periodicals. I can help to focus what you are trying to say and act as the audience for your story. It is important to have a strong mirror to reflect off of so that you can check to see if what you are trying to convey is coming across. The process takes time and patience, but it is worth an end result that stronger and more compelling.
