I have had a long and varied education. As an undergraduate I majored in biology, but had 3/4 of a major in theater arts and Scandinavian studies. I wanted to get the most varied education that I could and think that focusing only on one's major is a missed opportunity. My classes in opera and chamber music have remained long after I have forgotten many of my hard science courses. After college I substituted in Chicago, working in 2nd and 3rd grade. I went on to graduate school in biology and from there to medical school. I taught psychology and pharmacology at the University of Phoenix. I have also taught medical students and most recently tutored 6th graders as part of the No Child Left Behind Program.

With my long years of experience, I think I know what a student needs to know to succeed. Learning has to be relevant and fun. Connecting the subject being studied to today's world makes a neuroconnection that holds that learning in place. Having seen a lot of illness and despair I now want to focus on young minds and getting them to feel the "aha" moment and to reach his/her potential. I feel this is the best way to use my time and leave the world a better place than I found it.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I have written numerous scientific papers and over a thousand medical legal papers 20-30 pages long as court documents that had to be letter perfect. I also taught psychology at University of Phoenix and graded hundreds of tests and essays with an eye to grammar as well as content.

MCAT

I have been a practicing physician for over 25 years. Although retired, I keep up with the literature and what is new in medicine. I scored in the 90th percentile in most subjects and I know what knowledge is required to be a doctor and know what kind of information is expected of a medical student.

Nutrition

I have a B.S. in biology as well as a master's in biology so I know the nutritional pathways from a biochemical perspective. I also had a holistic medical clinic for over 20 years and used nutrition as part of the treatment program on a daily basis. I have an extensive knowledge of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and feel well qualified to teach in these areas.

Pharmacology

I practiced as a physician for 25 years. I was certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry. During that time, I wrote prescriptions and knew the medications and method of action, half lives, and drug interactions of hundreds of drugs. I was also trained in medical school and further in residency in the basic pharmacodynamics of medications as they affect each organ. I taught psychopharmacology at University of Phoenix for several semesters.

Study Skills

Having a Bachelor's, Master's and medical degree, I have had to learn a tremendous amount of information. I have used everything from mnemonics to various strategies of association, keywords, and other methods to outline, learn, and retain what was required -- and not just for a test, but the practical knowledge required to practice medicine. I know how to learn and can teach others these same study methods.
