I have an excellent (British) academic background, and have been tutoring for eleven years, focusing exclusively on math for the last eight.
I have helped middle and high school pupils as well as many Junior College students. I cover basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, algebra 1 and 2, pre-calculus, statistics and ACT tests. At the JC I cover Math 150A, 150B, 151, 155, Intermediate Algebra and have helped several pupils with Stats (15) - the second of which was getting Ds in his tests before he contacted me but after a few weeks' tutoring got a C overall and passed. I can also help with basic calculus (Math 1A).
In the UK, I helped over two hundred people achieve what they wanted, from high-school qualifications (GCSEs, British SATs) to help with fun elementary-level math and number skills or simply helping adults improve their mental arithmetic. I've also worked a lot with people needing to pass high school-equivalence tests to qualify for teacher-training courses.
I am very familiar with the GMAT test, having helped a couple of people prepare for this exam so they could go on to study an MBA.
I'm aware that people need to enjoy something to focus on learning, and I always try to make the lessons fun as well as thorough.
I firmly believe that everyone can get a lot better at math with just effort and guidance. You do not have to "be a math person" to do well. As much as I can I will explain the reasons behind the formulas, the rules, the jargon. Almost all my pupils State-side so far have said that I explain things in ways that make more sense than what they've heard at school/college or what they've read in their books. This is because I always have one eye on WHY the math happens the way it does. If you understand the simple principles behind math then, a lot of the time, the procedures and answers are obvious!
Math is much easier than you think it is.
What a handful of recent/current clients have said:
"Ben has been tremendous to work with. He is positive, punctual and makes things very easy. Highly recommended. A+"
"Awesome math tutor! I was struggling with Elementary Statistics and I was ready to throw in the towel and was rescued by Ben. I just wish that I had employed him sooner. I look forward to working with him again on my next math endeavor."
“Ben was my tutor for intermediate algebra and i have to say I couldn’t been happier for having found him. We would meet 2 days every week for an 1hr and 30min. Within that hour I understood the subject. I would ask questions and he would always have an answer for me. He is a great tutor and I would recommend people to hire him as a tutor. Something I really like about him was that he was really clear on his explanations and he never confused me.”
“Ben is great! My 14-year-old daughter was struggling with math and after only a couple of sessions got an A on a math test and since has brought her grade up 2 grade levels. More importantly, she is feeling more and more confident with her math skills and looks forward to seeing Ben every week! It’s great to have a tutor that your child really likes and is excited to see. I highly recommend Ben!!!”
“We feel fortunate to have found Ben to help our daughter with her algebra struggles! He’s great at explaining the lesson in a way that she can understand, giving her the confidence in her ability to do the work on her own. He has a casual and friendly personality and is a pleasure to work with!”
“Working with Ben as my tutor totally changed my view on math. With his insight he gave me stronger confident in the subject of math that I didn’t have before such as new study habits.”
