Language arts teacher/writer/tutor/reading specialist/speaker

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut with a degree in English, have published two books and am working on my third. I have helped students from coast-to-coast, while teaching at NYANA-New York Association for New Americans in Manhattan, and tutoring in Queens, Brooklyn, San Diego and Los Angeles.

When I taught in elementary schools in Santa Monica and Los Angeles and San Diego, my strength besides writing and reading English was play-leading and creativity involving new games and exercises for kids. My goal eventually is to help pre-schoolers with creative, positive feedback as they prepare for school where tests and exams await.

I have tutored fellow employees' children while working at KNX 1070 Newsradio in Los Angeles, where I was a Senior News Writer from 2004 to 2012, until leaving to write books and teach.

I've freelanced as a journalist writing news for nearly ten years as well as written stories for the LA Times, Los Angeles Magazine, The California Lawyer, Village Voice, Santa Monica Daily Press, and others.

Reading

I was a READING SPECIALIST in the LAUSD at an elementary school for 5th graders and 4th graders. I have also taught reading and writing at another elementary school in Santa Monica at the 4th and 5th grade levels.

Writing

I have written two books and many articles and essays for public radio and newspapers like The LA Times, Los Angeles Magazine, and the Santa Monica Sun and Daily Press. I also just completed eight years writing the news at KNX 1070 News Radio.

English

I was an English major at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and am the author of two books and freelance journalist for the LA TIMES and other publications as well as a news writer on KNX 1070 Newsradio for 8 years.

Elementary (K-6th)

Last year I taught writing and reading as a Language Arts Specialist at Roosevelt Elementary in Santa Monica, grades 4 and 5. I've been a reading specialist at an elementary school in Los Angeles. I volunteered at the 826 LA Program in Venice, CA as an after school tutor. At an elementary school in San Diego, I was the newspaper adviser.

Theatre

As a playwright in New York, I wrote for productions that played Off-Off Broadway and toured Germany, Holland, New Jersey and Minneapolis, performed by The Bond Street Theatre Coalition, HEAP Theater, and DaK Theater. I contributed lines to the Broadway show "Catskills on Broadway" which ran at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Football

I played NCAA football for Wesleyan University in Connecticut and high school football in Detroit, Michigan.

Basketball

I played high school basketball at a Detroit day school, where the alumni include NBA stars Chris Webber and Shane Battier.

Baseball

I played high school baseball in Detroit and grew up playing from the age of 8 to 13 in the Northwest Detroit Little League.

Public Speaking

I not only hosted an evening of humor and music at the Central Library's Taper Auditorium, I have performed monologues in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and appeared at book festivals in front of hundreds of people in Detroit and St. Louis.

CBEST

I took the CBEST in the spring of 2000, which qualified me to teach at Santa Monica Roosevelt Elementary.

Speech

I have not only performed on stage for years as a member of a theater troupe in New York, I have written speeches for political figures and delivered monologues in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and have appeared at book festivals in front of hundreds of people in Detroit and St. Louis.
