Hello and welcome!

I am a graduate student with a bachelor's in Cognitive Science, a mesh of biology, mathematics, computer science and psychology. I have learnt about how people learn and, over the past two years, put that knowledge into practice as a tutor. Helping students to understand the fundamental concepts of reading, writing, and problem solving, with elementary mathematics through to algebra 2, I enjoy seeing students really get into the material and succeed.

Recently, I have been a tutor in the Lindamood-Bell writing and reading comprehension program, a program that has a proven record of success teaching students, who struggle with reading comprehension, to read above grade level. I have experience teaching winning strategies at the elementary and middle school level in math, writing and reading to students with disabilities.

Lastly, people are often discouraged by math, and topics like algebra can be scary for students. I understand when they think "I'm no good at math" its not because they can't do it, but because they haven't been given the individual attention they need to learn. I can teach those students rules and strategies for solving real life problems and make math, if not fun, then at least a breeze by comparison.

Algebra 1

This is a very common area that students struggle in as they are introduced to symbolic mathematics. It is here that the idea of "I can't do math" sometimes begins, and it is here that I can help the student work through the problem and understand the material.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a subject that students find confusing as they begin to move past basic algebra and tackle more complex word problems. I can help these students work step - by - step through the problems. By doing this, the student is able to begin applying these techniques to tests and homework independently.

Geometry

Understanding how to apply our algebra and understanding of geometric shapes to a problem is of critical importance to all people, whether you go into a trade like carpentry, the arts or even teaching English.

I can help a student become familiar with the reasoning and problem solving skills we use to solve word problems.

Reading

As a tutor, I know that even the most gifted student can have trouble reading because of decoding errors, i.e. the student switches letters when reading or inputs a word that makes the most sense. Because of my education and experience as a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Centers, I can lead students through the process of retraining their brain, enabling them to succeed in school.
