I have over 8 years of tutoring experience, and have worked with all ages of students- elementary to college. My first tutoring experience was as a high school student, tutoring elementary students. I continued this work in college. I had great success in helping struggling students by engaging them. I created a fun environment that transformed students feelings of “not being smart enough” to understand that they were smart enough and that learning could be fun. After tutoring elementary students, I moved onto middle school and high school tutoring, where I specialized in math and science. Again, I had great success in helping students move past their blocks by creating a positive and engaging learning environment. I also tutored fellow college students in writing, math and science while in college. They appreciated my patience, passion and clarity in these subjects. Most recently, I have been tutoring UCSC students and faculty in English and writing.
When tutoring, I tune into the needs of the student. I listen deeply for what is hard, confusing or distressing and then help clear up the block with new approaches or techniques. I also help the student uncover the line of thinking that propels them in that subject, helping them alleviate their stress in that subject long term. I get to know the student, relating to the subject to what is alive for them. I also believe that humor and fun are critical to the learning process. I create a learning environment that is fun and lighthearted.
I am patient, engaging and nonjudgmental. I believe that everyone has intelligence and am passionate about helping them find it. I look forward to working with you or your child, making what was hard easy!
