Specialist in K-5 English, Math, Reading and Writing

I’ve spent the past 20 years teaching in all kinds of contexts:

- making learning fun in after-school settings
- intensive and conversational ESL for kids and adults
- helping kids with Down syndrome, ADHD, and autism
- developing science camps, creative writing workshops, and math intensives
- working with parents and kids as a literacy specialist

I specialize in hands-on learning for K-5 that is especially effective with language learners, kids who struggle to learn, or those who can’t seem to “get” a concept.

I also have a strong language background and enjoy teaching ESL, Spanish, Portuguese, English, and reading and writing to children and adults. I have a master’s degree in TESL/TEFL.

Learning with me may be different than what you have experienced before. I help students connect new information to what they already know, so concepts make sense. We break skills down into manageable chunks and practice them in fun ways so information really “sticks”. Students really understand the concepts and master new skills, so that often the topic that was so difficult becomes their favorite subject!

Reading

I have eleven years' experience developing reading programs and activities for children in grades K-5.

During this time, I led bilingual K-2 children and their parents in fun reading and writing activities, and gave kids the practice and tools they needed to overcome reading difficulties.

Writing

I specialize in teaching elementary kids creative writing and personal nonfiction story writing. I developed a 6-week summer program for K-5 that not only got kids comfortable with story writing and revision, but taught them how to add real spark with descriptive words, interesting beginnings and endings, and dialogue.

English

I enjoy helping both native speakers and English learners perfect their English skills.

I have a Master's in Linguistics with an emphasis in TESL/TEFL, and taught intensive English for 7 years. My undergraduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology led to a specialization in pronunciation, and I love helping students master the sounds and rhythms of conversational English. Elementary Math

I specialize in making math understandable through hands-on activities, manipulatives, and math games. I find that kids in grades K-5 (and even into the higher grades) understand math more easily and enjoy it more when they can work with the problems using their hands as well as on paper.

I didn't like math as a child, but it has become one of my favorite subjects to teach. I love helping kids master math skills and gain confidence.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked for more than 20 years teaching and creating learning curriculum for children in grades K-6. Settings have included substitute teaching, coordinator of an academic intensive after-school program, ESL/EFL, and special needs teacher.

Phonics

The whole language approach of teaching reading that is so prevalent is schools does not work for everyone. Some children need a very explicit, step-by-step approach to decoding written words, and these children benefit tremendously from phonics instruction. Study Skills

In my 11 years as coordinator of an academic after-school program, it was very important that the kids learned basic study skills and organization. They learned to organize their backpacks, write daily in an assignment book, set up a study space, and be responsible for their work tools. They also learned in-book skills such as skimming and scanning, using highlighted and bold text for cues, and study strategies for tests. Special Needs

I have worked with special needs kids in a variety of settings. I worked for a year as the teacher and curriculum developer at the Down Syndrome League, where I worked with preschool and elementary-aged children on literacy skills. I have also developed hands-on learning materials for nontraditional learners with various disabilities and learning differences, including autism.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree in Linguistics with a specialization in TESL/TEFL. I worked for 9 years teaching intensive language classes to adults in the university and in language schools, as well as teaching ESL to elementary children.

I have experience teaching all areas and levels of ESL. My specialization is in conversation, pronunciation, and helping students understand the speech of native speakers.

ADD/ADHD

I worked with several children over the years who had ADD/ADHD. This was in the context of an academic after-school program, which was a challenging environment for these kids. To help them focus and get homework done, I made physical adjustments to these children's study spaces, and also developed hands-on teaching methods that encouraged focused movement and took advantage of these kids' strengths.

Microsoft Outlook

I used Outlook for 11 years in my last place of employment. I can help you learn to use the calendar, schedule meetings, set up a task list, and use other unique features of Outlook.

Needlework

I enjoy teaching children and adults to knit. Knitting can be an extremely relaxing and engaging hobby (for boys and men, too), but it can be frustrating if it is not taught well. I've taught classes in community centers and at the library, as well as privately, and I use a gradual, step-by-step method that guarantees success. Your first project will be a bookmark!

Microsoft Publisher

I have many years' experience using Microsoft Publisher for flyers, booklets, and other design work. I have a lot of fun using Publisher as a design tool and would look forward to training others to use it.
