I've been tutoring nearly full time for almost two years with various companies around the peninsula. I really enjoy working with students of all skill levels in challenging math and science topics. I try to emphasize systematic problem solving and conceptual understanding -- i.e. actually knowing what one is doing vs. barreling though 'plug-and-chug' style problem solving. I earned my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford in 2011, and since then I've been tutoring in 1-on-1, small group, and large group settings. I work for both private and government-funded companies and am looking to shift more of my focus to 1-on-1 tutoring. Private companies that I work for include Cardinal Education (over 1 year), Studypoint (6 months), and Harvard Square Academy (6 months). SES providers that I work for include A+ Educational services (10 months) and XCel Educational Services (1 month). I've spent the majority of my work hours coaching students 1-on-1 in standardized tests like the SAT (for over 1 year), the ACT (for over 1 year), the ISEE (2 years), and the SSAT (2 years), though I have also engaged many students in purely academic tutoring for topics like physics, calculus, trigonometry, linear algebra, pre-calculus, algebra I and II, chemistry, differential equations, and AP Physics (all for over a year).

I like to work with students 1-on-1 because it I find that it facilitates the most steady flow of information -- especially when there is good rapport between the student and the tutor. I also enjoy the challenge of picking up on the student's learning style and helping them improve their problem-solving and concept retention in the most natural way possible (that is, without stress!). And I especially love getting to know my students ... though my approach is also very results-oriented. I really do want my students to excel on their homework and tests, so I'll take the extra step and look ahead through the syllabi and homework assignments to help create study plans. I have spent a lot of time now exploring math and physical sciences in both tutoring and applied sciences contexts, and am ready to share what I've learned to help students perform to their maximum potential.

When I'm not tutoring or studying for the EIT exam, I enjoy longboarding, producing music/DJing, reading, and exercising.

ACT Math

I scored 35 in ACT math when I was in high school and I have tutored in ACT math for over a year. I have also taught ACT math classes over the summer in a small group setting. I am currently working with students one on one in ACT test prep.

Algebra 1

I have been using algebra pretty regularly for over 10 years. I first picked it up in the seventh grade, and since have taught algebra classes and tutored students 1-on-1 in the subject. I am currently tutoring a couple of students 1-on-1 on pre-algebra and algebra down in Santa Clara to get them ready for some early testing.

Algebra 2

I have studied all levels of algebra, from basic through linear algebra with optimization. I have been tutoring students in Algebra II for nearly 2 years, with both academic and test-prep specific focuses. I also have gone through numerous Algebra II textbooks that are used in many schools and have been exposed to a lot of the common trouble problems. I'm especially well-versed in word problems, and I have a lot of experience with helping students frame word problems as mathematical statements and identify the correct knowns and unknowns in more complex systems of equations. I also know the function and graph-interpretations skills necessary to prepare students for Pre-Calculus, which I am also extremely well versed in.

Calculus

I first studied calculus in high school. After two years of that I went through college math with calculus as the base and ended with differential equations. I can do calculus of one and many variables, as well as some of the more abstruse topics like convergence tests. I am also well versed in applied calculus (like physics w/ calculus), etc.

Geometry

I've been tutoring students in geometry for two years. Recently, I've been working with students 1-on-1 in honors geometry and regular geometry. Relevant subject matter includes coordinate geometry, proofs/theorems, inductive vs. deductive reasoning, points, lines, planes, polygons, and all relevant methods regarding metrics. I also have extensive experience with a few of the more common geometry high school texts.

Mechanical Engineering

In 2011 I received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. The curriculum included a strong focus on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and compressible flow/turbomachinery, as well as basic circuits/electrostatics, chemistry, advanced mathematics, statics/dynamics, shop, control systems and feedback design, product design and manufacturing, computer science, ethics, and engineering drawing/writing. I have also recently taken my EIT/FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam, which I will receive the results of in eight weeks. This exam also involved a Mechanical-specific portion that rigorously tested my knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics/compressible flow.

Physics

I have been studying physics for over six years. I started learning physics for engineers in 2007 and was educated in mechanics, statics, dynamics and kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, compressible flow and turbomachinery, advanced thermal systems, electricity and magnetism, circuit design, and mechanical design. I have been tutoring students in physics for two years from regular physics to AP physics. I am also on the verge of becoming an engineer in training, which requires that I stay proficient in all of these topics.

Precalculus

I've been doing precalculus for about eight years and I've been tutoring precalculus for two years. I've constantly guided multiple students through some very advanced pre-calculus curriculum in the past year on topics including vectors in three dimensions, trigonometry, parametric equations, etc.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring students in SAT Math for two years. My degree is in Mech Engineering, so math is my 'bread and butter' so to speak. I teach SAT Math in Santa Clara on weekends as well, so my skills remain sharp. I scored a 780 on the SAT Math in high school.

SAT Writing

I have been working with students to develop their SAT essays for nearly 2 years. I have been exposed to hundreds of essays from dozens of students and have pinpointed the most common (and easily fixed) problems. I have also internalized the rubric of the SAT Writing section and have been able to score essays to within 1 point of the actual score on repeated occasions. I also help students improve quickly by drafting shorter versions of essays (such as introductory paragraphs or concluding paragraphs).

Trigonometry

I have been tutoring students in trigonometry for over a year in 1-on-1 settings. As far as my educational background in it, I have not only mastered the standardized test applications of trig, but I have been specifically contracted by one company to answer students' math homework questions and have seen some of the nastiest applications of trigonometry (and how to deal with them). My philosophy with trig is: don't memorize . . . conceptualize.

Education

Stanford University

Excellent tutor — Joseph is wonderful! He is patient, focused and really understands the subject of mathematics. He has been working with our son for the past month in algebra 3 & 4 and pre-calc. His grades and understanding of his lessons have much improved. We will continue to work with Joseph throughout the year. I highly recommend! ...
